TRYOUT INFORMATION NEWSLETTER 2021-2022
Please read this information carefully:
Please note that the Letter of Agreement, Dance Team Medical Waiver, and Student Evaluation Form, must be filled out, printed, and returned to the CMS office with Jessica Talbott by 3:30pm on Friday, February 26, 2021, with a copy of the fall semester report card attached.
The forms may be returned earlier than the specified due date.
(Copies of the report cards can be printed from Skyward, or ask your campus counselor how to obtain one.)
We must have your averages and conduct.
CMS Stars Tryout Schedule and Information
Mandatory Parent/Candidate Meeting: Monday, February 15th, 2021 from 7:00 - 7:30 pm on Webex:

Mandatory Workshop: Monday, March 8th, 2021 from 3:45 - 5:30 pm in the CMS South Gym, attached to building
Mock Audition: Thursday, March 11 th, 2021 from 3:45 - 5:30 pm CMS North Gym (Gym not attached to building)
Auditions: Friday, March 12th, 2021 from 4:00 - until conclusion. Dancers will meet in CMS Classroom 122 and auditions will be held in the North Gym)
What to Wear:
Workshops - Dance attire or other clothing that will allow freedom of movement and flexibility. Must be in Dress Code.
Auditions - Plain black t-shirt or leotard, black shorts (not too baggy)
For both workshops and auditions -
- Footwear must be worn, preferably conducive to toe pointing. No bare feet.
- Hair in a low ponytail.
- No jewelry.
- No gum or candy. Eat a snack before workshops begin. Bring a water bottle.
- Face Mask
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from practices. Carpooling is encouraged. Non-participants, including parents, are not allowed to attend the practices or the judging. Thank you for your cooperation.
WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY OF STARS AUDITIONS?
WHEN: Friday, March 12th, 2021
WHERE: Room 122 and the North Gym
TIME: 4:00 p.m. - until conclusion
WHO MAY TRY OUT FOR STARS? Any girl who is presently in grades 5 through 7 and has completed and passed the application process (see the application packet when available) may audition.
IS THERE AN INFORMATION MEETING PRIOR TO THE AUDITIONS? Yes. There will be a mandatory Parent and Candidate Meeting for all STARS candidates and at least one parent/guardian prior to the audition date. Check the Audition packet for the specific date and time. (02/15/2021 this year)
WHAT DANCE TECHNIQUE ELEMENTS DO I NEED TO KNOW FOR STARS TRYOUTS? The STARS candidate will need to perform the following technical items: right and left splits, right and left single pirouettes, and right and left jete’ (leaps). There will also be Jazz & Hip Hop routines. (Not everyone will have their splits. We want to see them trying.)
HOW DO THEY ANNOUNCE WHO HAS MADE THE CMS STARS DANCE TEAM? The list of new team members is announced on the STARS webpage. Go to the CMS website, click on Activities, then on Dance team.
IS THERE A SET NUMBER OF STARS? No, there is no set number of team members. In the past the team has ranged from 17-40 members. Team size is determined by a natural break in scores.
CAN I GET A RECORDING OF THE TRYOUT MUSIC?
It will be posted on the STARS webpage and this newsletter once picked.
DOES ACADEMICS/CONDUCT COUNT TOWARD STARS TRYOUTS? Yes, there is a student evaluation sheet that is 30 points of the candidate’s 130 point total score. The evaluation is based on conduct, grades, and attendance. A candidate must not have failed 2 or more classes during any six weeks grading period throughout the school year.
WHO JUDGES TRYOUTS? A panel of three certified dance/drill team educators will judge in accordance with the Texas Dance Team Educators Association guidelines for auditions. The three scores are then averaged to get the final score.
WHEN DO STARS PRACTICE? STARS practice after school every Friday from 3:45PM to 5:30 PM.in the CMS Gym and/or the PDEC. (occasionally runs longer if upcoming event) We may have other rehearsals as we get closer to the competition weekends in February.
WHEN DO STARS PERFORM? STARS perform at several home football games and basketball games. STARS also perform at pep rallies, CHHS Pantera Spring Fling and at contest in the spring.
WHAT TYPE OF SUMMER COMMITMENTS IS THERE TO STARS? STARS officers go to camp in early August. After team camp, there is practice every Friday for the team and every Thursday for officers. These camps and practices are all mandatory to be a member of STARS.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO FOR STARS OFFICER TRYOUTS? Officer candidates must have been on the team for one year and perform the team tryout routine, an officer routine, teach 4-8 counts of a previous routine, a mini-solo and be interviewed by the judges.
COLLEYVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE TEAM EXPENSES
Expenses can include, but are not limited to, the following projections:

- *Uniforms (jacket, t-shirts, shoes, tights, accessories, etc.) $450
- *Friday Practice Gear (Choice of store) (varies depending on store) (all black - tank leotard, jazz pants, booty shorts, leggings) $100
- Game Day Clothing (t-shirts, jersey, etc.) $100
- Booster Dues (One-time fee) $275
- *Field shoes, socks, makeup, etc . $75

There will be extra costs (i.e.- meals, extra tights, etc), throughout the year.
* denotes returning dancers may have already purchased all or part of the expenses in this category.
The CMS Stars Dance Team is a self-supporting activity. Fundraising activities will be undertaken to defray some costs to parents.
