Who Signed Up For The Massachusetts

The people who signed up were a variety of people. There were former farmers, run away slaves, older men, a couple younger guys. There were a couple rich and free Africans. Most of the people who signed up were not smart.

Arriving and Training

They were being made fun of when they arrived at the camp. They were being told that a pig is more useful than they are. Training was bad. They did not know how to count, march, or anything really. They were always getting yelled at. They were not treated well.

Discrimination

Nobody like them when they came into the camp. They said a pig would be more useful. They were also making fun of them bye saying it's getting dark early around here. They were not given shoes for the longest time because they were African American.

The 1st Assignment in South Carolina

The Massachusetts 54th was used to steal the supplies from the people. And then burn down there houses. They did this because they had to listen to their leader, and their leader told them to.

Manual Labor

The white people had the African Americans working on Manual labor that they did not want to do. The Whites did not think the African Americans would be good fighters.

First Battle Experience

The First Battle experience was not how they thought it would go. They thought it would be easy. It was not as easy as they thought it would be. They did end up getting the enemy to retreat but that is when it really hit them that they could die.

What did they expect from first fight

They expected that they would go into battle. They would shoot at each other. And then they would go home happy. But they find out it's nothing like that.

Attack on Wagner

The attack on fort Wagner was not good for the Massachusetts 54th. Most all of them died during the attack. They ran on the beach, up the hill, and were trying to get into the walls.
