Chapters 19-21
Chapter 19: Do parents have choices in educating their children?
A high school student who is receiving home school instruction from her parents would like to be on the cross country team at the local public high school. When her parents approached the public school about this issue, school officials declined to let her participate. Must public school officials permit home-schooled students to participate in extra-curricular activities?
What is the School Choice Movement?
Chapter 20: When can schools restrict personal appearance?
A school district adopted a policy that said all male students must have short hair. A male high school student wanted to grow his hair long in order to donate his hair to “Locks of Love.” Locks of Love is a program that makes wigs for those cancer patients who have lost their hair. The school district would not permit him to grow long hair and suspended him after he refused to cut his hair. The boy argues that there is no rational reason for the school district’s actions. What are the legal issues involved?
