Fancy Nancy Day- September 8!!!
On Friday, September 8 we will be celebrating the writing trait WORD CHOICE. On this day everyone should come dressed in their fanciest clothes in honor of the favorite children’s book Fancy Nancy written by Jane O’Conner. In the story, Fancy wishes her ordinary, boring family would be fancier. The author brings to life a great story filled with marvelous vocabulary. This day will be sure to get students using “fancy” words in their everyday writing.
***We will have an exquisite fashion show showing off all of the remarkable (fancy) attire worn by the students.
Refocuses
I started using the refocus procedure this week. Just a reminder they will receive 1 verbal warning to change their behavior. If the behavior continues they will be asked to refocus--- move to a quiet spot in the room, fill out the green refocus sheet, and wait (while listening to the lesson) for me to check their paper. Please sign the refocus and return it with your child the next day.
Jackets Needed!
It tends to get a little chilly at times in our classroom. Your child is welcome to bring a sweatshirt or jacket to leave at school in the closet so they'll have something to wear if they get cold.
If you’d like to sit with your child at lunch we’d love to have you. Lunch begins at 11:47 a.m. If you wish to eat the school lunch, please call the office to order a tray.
Homework
Your child's nightly homework: Read 20 minutes every night!
Next week I'm going to be sending home a couple of activities at your child's reading level. These are activities are things that you can keep at home - no need to return them. They are just to help you out if you are wondering what a certain reading level "looks" like and give you on level texts to help them practice fluency and comprehension skills.
Reading
We worked continues working hard this week to analyze characters, summarize the beginning, middle and end of the story and also learned about idioms. All in addition to practicing fluency, vocabulary and reading with expression!

English and Writing
In writing we are talking about what good writers do. We've made anchor charts of what to do if you're having trouble during writing time. We used a simple rubric to show us what 1,2,3 and 4 writing looks like at this point in the year. We rated our own writing with a friend. We also discussed ways and phrases that could be helpful or hurtful when we peer edit or use the rubric to rate someone else's writing.
English skills: sentence fragments and compound sentences
