News from Sundling Junior High
February 28, 2020
Letter from the Principal
Hello Sundling Families,
It is hard to believe, but we will be wrapping up the 3rd quarter of school in just a few short weeks, Friday, March 13th to be exact. With that said, our 8th graders are one step closer to the tranisition to high school, while our 7th graders will be thinking about the move to 8th grade, and becoming the leaders of our school. Students should continue to stay focused, and set goals for the 4th quarter of school, ending the year on a positive note both academically and socially/emotionally. We continue to have high expectations for behavior, and continue to push our "Pledge to the Paladin" theme as we move through the school year. We have accomplished some amazing things this school year, and pushed through the challenges of junior high school, but still have work to do until we end in May.
Big shout out to wrestling coaches Eric Young and Chris Dewey on a great season with the wrestling team. Through a few victories, and some losses only due to forfeiting weight classes, this team improved and bonded during the season. It was great to see both the individual growth and committment to the team as the season came to an end. Nicole Mogilinski and Anne Olson are in the midst of Girls Volleyball season and are gaining momentum as they head into the season ending tournaments. Best of luck! Track & Field and Girls Soccer seasons are approaching fast, and will be in full swing following our Spring Break!
As we move into spring, our students will be taking annual district and state assessments. These tests are helpful not only to show the growth and progress of our individual students, but are very helpful to look at our entire school, and set school improvement growth targets based upon the results. Please encourage your child to remain focused and to give their best effort. Students will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) Test from April 1st through April 3rd, our 8th graders will take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) on April 21st, and everyone will take Spring MAP Math and reading tests on May 4th through May 6th.

Physical Education (PE) in D15 Schools
PE helps students build social skills, reduce stress and increase their academic focus
Everyone knows that Physical Education (PE) and recess are great for getting out the extra energy our students have! This is especially true in the winter with less daylight for children to play outdoors after school. But did you know that physical education and exercise are also great for building our students’ social skills, reducing their stress levels and even increasing their academic focus? It's true!
Build Social Skills: Ask a student what their favorite subject is in school and most will report PE class and lunch! Why? These are the less structured times in our students’ day where they can socialize with friends, relax, and most importantly, have fun. They may not realize it, but these are important life skills that will follow them throughout their lives. Having time to practice taking turns in conversation, relating to the thoughts and feelings of others, and learning how to have fun in a safe and nurturing environment are very important parts of education.
Reduce Stress: Students all over the world are reporting higher levels of stress than previous generations. This statistic alone makes it very important for students to have exercise incorporated into their home lives and their school day. Physical exercise releases endorphins that helps students feel calm, regulated, and ready to learn.
Increase Focus: Have you ever been sitting for awhile and noticed your leg is bouncing up and down? This phenomenon is the result of pent up energy from sitting in the same place for an extended period of time. As much as teachers try to keep kids moving and engaged in classroom activities, being seated for long periods of time is sometimes unavoidable. These are the days PE class is even more important! Time spent in PE class, in addition to recess, allows students to expend the pent up energy that, left unaddressed, can lead to fidgeting and decreased attention spans.
Our dedicated PE department staff stay on top of best practices and pull out all the stops to connect with what students are interested in -- from the “on trend” craze in music or the latest TikTok dance -- to get students on the move in challenging PE classes, daily for our junior high students and twice weekly for grades 1-6. Elementary classroom teachers are encouraged to lead “in the classroom” movement activities on alternate days, too.
Interested in ways to incorporate more movement into your child’s life after school?

WINTERTIME ILLNESS
Is it fact or fiction that cold weather makes us sick? It does seem like we are
hearing a lot about colds and flu this time of year!
Scientists know that the incidence of colds peak in the winter and spring perhaps
because the viruses that cause colds multiply better at cooler temperatures. They
have also found that when the air we breathe in through our nose is cold, our
immune response is not as good as when the air temperature is warmer. The flu
is known to peak this time of year too as we have heard about in our national and
global news reports.
Other scientific studies have shown that well balanced meals will help us stay
warmer when the weather does get cold. Warm things to drink rather than cold
help us keep warm too. Dressing for the winter weather in layered, not tight
clothing, keeping our dry feet and wearing something on our heads, hands and
neck are all ways to feel warm when we are outdoors.
So cold weather doesn’t actually cause illness but the weather and other factors
can weaken our ability to fight off an illness. It is just smart to do what we can to
stay healthy this time of year!
As a reminder, students need to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to
school after an illness. This allows the student to fully recover and also protects
the other students from possibly getting sick.

Census 2020
Every 10 years, the United States counts the people in this country. This process is called the Census. Everyone counts – babies, children, teens, adults and older adults.
Illinois receives $20 billion in federal funding through U.S. Census data. This funding is important as it supports vital programs such as public schools, Medicaid and programs that help low-income households. If Illinoisans are not counted during the upcoming 2020 Census, fewer resources will come to the state, having a direct impact on us here in District 15.
District 15 will be working with other community organizations to support a complete count in our area. District 15 will be sharing more information on how to participate in the coming weeks.
Online Registration for the 2020/21 School Year is Open NOW!
Online registration is now open for all students attending District 15 schools in the 2020-21 school year!
We opened registration earlier this year to allow families more time to complete the process. Please visit www.ccsd15.net/registration for information and instructions on how to register your child. If you are having trouble completing the process, please contact your child’s school office for assistance.
Winter Weather Closures
District 15’s Inclement Weather Protocols
As we enter the winter season, we want to remind families of District 15 families of the district’s emergency closing protocol. The school district takes the responsibility of deciding to close schools very seriously, and will only close in the event of extremely inclement weather.
If school is canceled, that decision is made by 5 a.m. You will be notified of the closure in a variety of ways:
Phone, Text, and Email—District 15 will send a message to all parents through a voice call, text message and email. Please ensure your contact information listed in the Infinite Campus is accurate. If you have changes you'd like to make to your personal contact information, please log into the Parent Portal and adjust your contact information.
Website—If classes are canceled due to inclement weather, an announcement will be posted on ccsd15.net and all of our school websites.
Social Media—School closures will be posted on the district’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
Radio and TV—Should a snow day be called, District 15 will inform television and radio stations.
For more information on emergency school closures and severe cold response plans, please visit our website.

D15 SPARK March Meeting
When: Monday, March 16th
Time: 7-8:30pm
Where: Sundling Jr High
Neurological Foundations: Assessment & Treatment
Dr. Suzanne Joseph, Doctor of Physical Therapy from Hands On Health Manual & Physical Therapy Services, LLC, offices in Naperville and Inverness, will join us. New research demonstrates the strong ability the nervous system has at any age to heal and further develop. Research also supports the need for specific therapies that mimic the way we originally learned. This presentation will show techniques to assist the nervous system to advance no matter what the challenge or development stage.
