Staff Weekly Update
October 29th - November 2nd, 2018
Can I get an AMEN?! The quote above couldn't be truer. We've all been there and you are not alone. Our last week of daylight savings time is here and our days are going get a bit darker. Unconsciously, it can even impact our emotions. Take care of yourself and try to find balance and permission to give yourself grace.
For me, last week flew by! It was a busy one. The highlight of our week was the 2nd Annual International Fair! SO grateful for those that signed up to volunteer and loved seeing a few of our staff attend w/ their families! This will be an annual event and it's starting to turn into one my favorites.
Goodbye to October and let's welcome in November!
With much respect,
Connie

Also, SGE will run on the 18-19 2-Hour Delay Schedule. Due to this schedule, everyone will still get lunch and a 30 minute RA times, but going out for outdoor recess is NOT a part of the schedule. If your grade level would still like to have outdoor recess, please be sure to check with all of the other grade levels of your time so we do not have so many students outside at once. No need to check with other grade levels if you're doing indoor recess. IF you do an outdoor or indoor recess time, please be sure to tell the office of your final time.
***IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE VETERANS DAY CLUB***
- This year, in lieu of making decorations, we would love for every classroom teacher to please have a community circle about honoring our Veterans what that means.
- We have created a list of books that can be found on YouTube as a read aloud (see below).
- You are also welcome to read a book from your classroom library collection or from our media center. It does not have to be from our list below.
- What is most important is to please have one (or more!) community circle to have a developmentally appropriate discussion of honoring our Veterans and what that means.
These books are not in our library but can be found on YouTube as a read aloud.
- Don't Forget, God Bless Our Troops by Jill Biden
- Hero Dad by Melinda Hardin
- Hero Mom by Melinda Hardin
- H is for Honor by Devin Scillian
- The Wall by Eve Bunting
- Veterans Heros in Our Neighborhood by Valerie Pfundstein
ZEF Family Book Club Night Information - Revised Timeline
- Last year, ZEF wrote a grant to Duke Energy with the goal of using books as a vehicle for bringing families closer together.
- Duke Energy provided hundreds of copies of four books, authored by Eve Bunting. The books are shown below.
- THIS week, families will be getting information about the ZEF Family Book Club and a short book summary about each book.
- IF they are interested in participating, they will be asked to please select one book title they would like to read as a family. They will select the book through a Google Form link.
- The books will then get sent home (1 book per family) and the family will be asked to read this book together.
- Then, the families will be asked to come to SGE the evening of Wed. 11/14 to participate in our ZEF Family Book Club Night! (see timeline below)
- So far, PVE, UE, and EE have all had this evening and their families enjoyed coming together and talking about their book. Our evening will also be the same time Boone Meadow has their ZEF Family Book Club night, too!
REVISED TIMELINE:
- Sat. 10/27 - Information sent out via SGE Weekly Newsletter + Google Form Link
- Wed. 10/31 - Last day for families to fill out the Google Form (form will be closed early Thursday morning)
- Thurs. 11/1 - Get books organized
- Fri. 11/2 - Pass out the books to each participating student/family
- Fri. 11/2 - Wed. 11/14 - Time to read the book at home
- Wed. 11/14 - 6:00-7:00 PM - ZEF Family Book Club Event

- Finally, as a friendly reminder of our ZCS Personal Business Leave + good information to know for our newest staff, I have copied/pasted the email about personal days sent by Becky Coffman on 5/8/16. This is per our CBA - Collective Bargaining Agreement
- A. Amount – Each employee shall be entitled to be absent from work three (3) days each school year for the transaction of personal business or the conduct of personal or civic affairs. Such leaves may be used in whole or half day increments. Requests for personal business leave should be made 48 hours in advance in writing to the building principal. In cases of emergency or other similar unforeseen circumstance, requests may be made orally to both the substitute coordinator and the building principal.
- B. Employees are discouraged from using personal business leave on staff development days or to extend a school vacation. If used on a staff development day then the employee remains totally responsible for securing the learning lost from their being absent during that activity.
- C. Accumulation – If an employee does not use all of the personal business leave in a given school year, the remaining personal business leave shall be accumulated for use in later school year, except that no more than a total of two (2) days may be accumulated from earlier school years for use as personal business leave, so that the maximum total personal business leave available in any one school year is three (3) days earned during the school year and up to two (2) days accumulated from earlier school years or a total of five (5) days.
- D. Conversion to Sick Leave – Any unused personal business leave not accumulated for use in later years as personal business leave shall be added to the employee’s accumulated sick leave.
