NWEA Updates
All of our NWEA Testing has been completed, but because of testing still going on at other levels, we can't run the Fall NWEA Reports yet. You can expect those to be sent home from HSE School over the week of Fall Break.

3rd/4th Grade Report Cards
Dear FES 3rd and 4th Grade Families,
I wanted to reach out to you today to talk briefly about our quarter 1 report card. At the beginning of every year, teachers invest time in building relationships with their students. This is done through a variety of activities over the course of a few weeks. As a result, teachers have less graded work for the first 8 weeks of school than the rest of the year. In every year, however, teachers are always assessing students informally through work samples, conferences, and group activities.
This year has been different. With students starting out virtually, teachers have had the benefit of getting to know their students better than ever before. One on one Zoom calls to start the year, lots of small group or possibly individual Zoom calls during our Phase 1 learning, and then the smaller class sizes that have been afforded to us during our Phase 2 learning have all helped teachers build those precious relationships.
However, some of the advantages of these times have also made it harder to collect formal assessments of our students. Additionally, working from home is not always ideal for students and therefore may not accurately reflect a student’s abilities and progress.
Throughout this first quarter, teachers have been working on grade level skills through a variety of activities, but unlike in past years, we will not be assigning a letter grade value in English/Language Arts or Math for Quarter 1. When you see your report card for Quarter 1, there will be individual skills marked with a 1, 2, or 3. Where you would normally see a letter grade on the report card, it will be blank instead. As you may have seen in past years, some skills are also left blank due to those skills not yet being taught.
With the beginning of Phase 3 on October 5th, we will be able to more accurately assess our students in a formal way. In quarter 2 you can expect to see letter grades return to each subject area.
Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

All Quarter 1 Report Cards
Our quarter ends on Friday 10/9. Report cards will be available on Thursday 10/15. You can view your student’s report card by logging into Skyward Family Access, opening the portfolio section, and opening your PDF. This year is a bit different for us as we navigate Quarter 1 assessments.
- Quarter 1 represents skills or concepts that are introduced or marked at the introductory level. These concepts will be further developed over the course of the year.
- Any areas indicators left blank have not yet been assessed. These will be assessed in quarters 2, 3 and 4.
- The Learner Characteristics section of the report card represents personal work habits or social skills. We have not yet assessed most of these as students have been learning virtually for a portion of our first quarter.
- Science and social studies indicators are not marked for the first semester as our focus towards assessment from spring into this winter will be on reading, writing and math. Science and social studies concepts are certainly integrated into our core subject areas. However, the assessment of science and social studies will be noted in our second semester.
- Our related arts classes will be using a participation grading scale. This will be marked at the semester.
Thank you!
Fall Picture Day - Oct. 29th !
We are encouraging you to order your school pictures on-line this year to cut down on potential contamination and in order to be as paperless as possible. Proofs will be emailed to you directly from Interstate Studios and will also include a direct link for ordering.
Virtual students are invited to come to school on 10/29 to have their pictures made at the same time as their class. Pictures will be taken in the library. Keep your eyes open for specific class times.
Picture Re-take Day
If your child missed the Oct. 29th picture day or you would like to have your child's picture retaken, a re-take day will be scheduled. Our photography company is scheduling this for early December. We will let you know once they have a date available for us!
Body Safety Program
Indiana Center for the Prevention of Youth Assistance and Suicide will be presenting the Body Safety Curriculum to FES the week of November 2nd. These required lessons help families and children increase awareness and knowledge of how to recognize, interrupt, stop, and prevent abuse. There is a flyer for the parent night attached so you can learn more about these presentations.
