Message from Administration
Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful winter break and that all of you were able to spend time with family and friends. We look forward to returning to school on Thursday, January 2. Everyone at NMES will be working to re-establish positive and productive routines for our students. We will also continue to emphasize growth mindset. Keeping a growth mindset is important at school and at home. We appreciate your support in helping our students to focus on their growth and improvement in a way that builds confidence and demonstrates perseverance.
We are excited to make 2020 another great year at our school. Thank you for your support!

Washington Capitals Hockey School Visit
Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. Ewen are excited to be participating in a program with the Washington Capitals called Hockey School. Our school is receiving free equipment and teaching resources though this program. In late January we will be having staff members from the Capitals visit NMES during PE classes for students in grades 3-5 to share more about the sport of hockey with our students. We are looking forward to this program and are excited to improve our hockey unit for all of our students!
Helping our Wolves at Home
Helping Our Wolves at Home (Kindergarten - Grade 5):
Language Arts
Tablets, smartphones, iPads, and chromebooks! Technology is everywhere and has become a huge part of our everyday lives. Parents are sometimes lost on how to help their kids with the world of digital media. Check out this article from Reading Rockets for some great tips on how you can be a guide for your child in this world full of ever-changing technology.
Math
Use the FCPS Elementary Math Home/School site for grade specific ideas on how to help your child at home with math.
Helping Our Younger Wolves at Home (Birth - Age 4):
Children develop math concepts and skills very early in life. From the moment they are born, babies begin to form ideas about math through everyday experiences and, most important, through interactions with trusted adults. Language - how we talk with infants and toddler about math ideas like more, empty, and full - matters. Check out these resources for practical ways to help young children develop early math concepts.
Important Information from the Health Room
As we enter the colder months we start to see a spike in illnesses. It can be difficult to distinguish when one may have the flu or just the common cold. The flu is a virus that usually attacks between October and April, peaking in the winter months. Symptoms include: severe, all-over body aches, vomiting, high fever, chills, and often sore throat. Typically the flu lasts 5 - 7 days; whereas, the common cold is a viral infection that usually brings on a runny nose, scratchy throat and lethargy. To avoid spreading, it is very important to encourage frequent hand-washing, tissue use and covering of the mouth when coughing. If you take your child to the doctor and there is confirmation of the flu please call the Health Room and let them know whether it is Type A or Type B flu. When making the decision on whether or not to send your child to school please keep in mind that it is FCPS policy if a student has a fever of 100F or above and/or vomiting that the student may not return to school until they are symptom free for 24 hours without the aid of medication.
Young Authors' Contest Update
School Delays and Closings
Occasionally, inclement weather and other safety or health conditions require FCPS to close, delay opening or dismiss early. Closing and delay decisions involve careful e valuation of a variety of factors. Check out the link on FCPS for information about closings and delays and how these decisions are determined and communicated.
Weather Guidelines and Outdoor Recess
It is difficult to set guidelines that fit every circumstance and condition with regards to outside activities during cold weather. Principals use their discretion and good judgment as to whether or not students will go outside, as well as the duration of the outside activity. Sometimes we may opt for a shorter recess period in cold temperatures or specify a temperature above 20 degrees as the cut-off point for going out. Elementary students should not go outdoors for recess or physical education whenever the temperature falls below 20 degrees, including the wind chill factor. The temperature cut-off at NMES is 20 degrees, so please remember to dress your child in the appropriate clothing (labeled coat, hat and gloves).
