Summer Smore
Did you know that students lose approximately one month of learning over the summer and it takes about 6 weeks to catch students up at the beginning of the next school year?
Well, there are many ways to reduce the “summer slide”. One important way is to read, read, read for 15-20 minutes a day. Our local Lower Macungie Library and Emmaus Library offer summer reading programs and Barnes and Noble also offers an incentive program.
Here are some other recommendations:
- Allow your child to respond to a story they have read through many modes; illustrating their favorite part, making up a new ending to the story, creating a puppet of a character in their story, etc...
- Have your child write about their day or an activity they participated in each day
- Have your child work on creating their own narrative, informational, or persuasive writing. This can be an on going project that lasts over several days or weeks.
- Students can keep their math and reading skills fresh using the buttons with links to many of the websites we use at school. The sites will still be active sites until the date listed.
