Week of Respect - Mrs. James
Week of Respect will be October 1-5th at Brookside. We will be promoting positive character education and allow for activities designed to prevent harassment, intimidation, and bullying. Students will be encouraged to come together and promote school spirit and positive peer interactions.

School Health Education Week - Mrs. Parke
School and Home Health
The Society for Public Health Education supports health educators and other professions by providing contemporary resources and information on topics related to school health. Nutrition, physical activity, mental and emotional health, youth violence prevention and safety and injury prevention are all important topics to address with students. As the school year progresses, I will be teaching health education to your children based on their developmental level.
Here is some interesting information for you to read. The information addressed fosters a holistic approach to education through mind, body and spirit and meets the district’s strategic goal for health and wellness.
Nutrition: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Research indicates children who eat a complete breakfast have been shown to work faster, make fewer mistakes in math problems and perform better on vocabulary tests than those who ate only a partial breakfast or no breakfast. They also show improved concentration, alertness, comprehension, memory and learning. Beyond academics, children who eat breakfast show decreased anxiety, depression, and hyperactivity.
Today, one in every five teens ages 12-19 is obese. Obesity in the early stages of life is more likely to follow into adulthood. But it also has an immediate impact. Obese teens may miss out on fun activities, face more health issues and suffer from a lack of confidence and self-esteem. Poor nutrition is a leading contributor to overweight and obesity in adolescents.
Physical Activity: This improves student fitness and lowers the risk of obesity in children. Children who take short, active breaks during the day perform better on standardized tests. In many schools across the country, physical education classes and recess have been reduced or eliminated. Brookside Elementary includes physical education twice a week and recess daily for your children. In addition, please promote the importance of physical activity with your children outside of school.
Mental and Emotional Health: Educating the whole child requires parents and educators to teach the importance of healthy mental and emotional development in their students/children. This plays a role in creating and maintaining mental and emotional balance at school and home. Addressing social and emotional needs of students positively impact academic outcomes.
Youth Violence Prevention: Youth violence and bullying are preventable public health issues. Brookside strives to create a safe school environment and no tolerance for bullying.
Safety and Injury Prevention: Unintentional injury, such as sports injuries, are often overlooked public health issues. They can result in disabilities and psychological effects. Please stress the importance of maintaining safety and preventing sports related injuries (i.e. Wear helmets while riding a bike, using appropriate sports gear, etc.).
