Origin of Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa was started by a man named Dr. Maulana Karenga. He thought of the idea of Kwanzaa to form a sense of unity between African - American people after the Watt riots occurred in in Los Angeles. The Watt Riots happened in 1965, Kwanzaa was first introduced a year later in 1966.
Watt Riots
The Watt Riots took place in 1965. They lasted for 6 days, starting on August 11th. The riots were caused by racial tension. In the 6 days the riots took place, building were burned and destroyed, causing more than 4o million dollars in property damage. 34 people died, there was over 3000 people arrested, and more than 1000 people injured.
