Safe and Supported 2018
Annual Fall Substance Use Prevention Programming
As part of our continued efforts to help promote safe and healthy behaviors for all youth, the WAWM School District, the WAWM Heroin/Opiate Task Force and the WAWM Community Coalition are teaming up to continue our support of students and families:
1. To prevent and reduce the incidence of alcohol and other drug use and abuse among youth and raise awareness of the dangers of early alcohol or drug use;
2. To encourage youth to talk to their parents, counselors, school personnel or a trusted adult about issues that may be affecting them;
3. To let youth know that they are not alone. That what they may be experiencing or going through is not just happening to them and connect them to support and resources along with increasing their knowledge of life skills, coping skills and healthy behaviors;
4. To provide support to youth if they or their loved ones are suffering from depression, anxiety, and/or the effects of alcohol, marijuana or other drugs;
5. To provide parents with support and education to enhance their values and parenting skills in raising strong, safe and healthy youth.
School day assemblies will take place at all secondary schools during the week of September 17-21. A Community Event for parents/guardians only, will take place at Nathan Hale High School on 9/25/18 from 6-7:30pm. A flyer further detailing the event, entitled “Check In…Before They Start to Check Out!” will be forthcoming. The evening presentation will include a mini tour of the KIP Teen Replica Room that reveals popular hiding places for drugs and alcohol.
As an incentive to high school students, parents/guardians who attend the evening presentation will receive a $10 discount voucher for their child to use toward the purchase of a Homecoming, Winter Formal, or Prom dance ticket or a $10 gift card. Parents will need to sign in (drop off a participation/attendance slip) at the designated school table. An incentive will also be offered for intermediate school students.
We believe the information your child will receive during this time is very important for their health, safety and well-being. However, if you do not want your child to attend the program, please contact your son or daughter’s school counselor or school social worker directly and ask that they be opted out.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, prescription painkiller overdoses have increased by 260% among 12-25 year olds in Wisconsin. Please join us at Nathan Hale on Tuesday, 9/25/18 from 6-7:30 so we can all work together to protect our children.
Principal Message
Dear Families,
Thank you for taking time to attend our annual Open House. It was great to see the community fill the auxiliary gym as the West Allis American Legion held a color guard ceremony in honor of Patriot's Day, 9/11.
This week PTA hosted our fundraiser kick off. Support the PTA sponsored activities by purchasing a Hansen pizza. In addition, the building revisited hallway and assembly expectations. We believe that Lane is the place to Be.
During the week, you may notice a WAWM police vehicle parked at school. As part of our ongoing relationship with the department, officers rotate hours at Lane. They enjoy getting to know the students, supporting families when needed, and interacting within the school community.

What is Restorative Practice?
The process at Lane involves teachers setting up classroom expectations, using student voice, along with building classroom and school community through the use of circles. Circles are used as a low-risk way for all students to get to know each other and practice social skills. Students stand in a circle around the classroom where everyone can see everyone else and answer a low-risk question such as, “What is your favorite food?” Each student is given the opportunity to respond to the question or pass. The goal of community building exercises, such as circles, is to create an environment where everyone respects each other and the classroom.
As the community develops, circles can be used to address problems encountered with curriculum questions, classroom behaviors, or group problem solving in an environment where everyone feels they belong and their voices matter.
We will continue to develop these strategies and others throughout this school year and the coming school years to enhance the positive school climate we have here at Lane.
