History

It was discovered by Freund and Speyer in Germany. They made oxycodone from thebaine in 1916. A German company had stopped the making heroin due to the dependence of the patients. They thought that a thebaine type drug like oxycodone would treat patients but with less of a dependence.

Development

In 1995 a Stamford Connecticut company named Purdue Pharma created OxyContin. The ingredient in the pain killer was actually not new. The way it was different was that It was made to last longer than morphine and other drugs, so you would only have to take one every 12 hours. That made taking pills less of a hassle.
