News You Can Use
I've been quiet, but I've been busy!
In addition to teaching these classes, I am also working to identify more Primary Talent Pool students and preparing to administer the CogAT screener to 4th and 7th graders to see if we can identify more students for the Gifted Program. If you ever wondered how to refer a student for Gifted Services, click this link to see the process.
I'm working hard on plans for serving high school students without disrupting their already busy schedules. I plan to be available at lunch on Thursday and Friday to chat with students. Tell them to look for the short old lady in the cafeteria!
Kindergarten and First Grade
I am also working to identify more students who show high potential as members of our Primary Talent Pool. Those students will have some additional opportunities for small group or individual activities throughout the year.

We are also exploring how our brains work. We looked this week at optical illusions and mystery pictures. I found most of those at www.braingle.com, so if you are interested in looking at them, you can find them there. We also watched the video below that helped us understand how important focus really is! Watch it with your child so they can see how you respond!
I am also reading Frindle by Andrew Clements aloud to these classes (except Mrs. Starkey's class- they are hearing Troublemaker by the same author). It is one of my favorite books and I love sharing it with students. We have a word of the week that goes along with our study of language. This week's word was MELANCHOLY. Ask your student if he or she knows what that means!
Middle School
Friday Philosophy Fests: Beginning in September, I will be offering an optional twice monthly pull-out class for middle school students. In order to attend, they must have teacher approval and must be completely caught up in their classes. I will have 7th and 8th graders on Sept. 6 and 20, and the 5th and 6th graders on Sept 13 and 27. I will provide them with some reading materials and an overview of Socratic Seminars on the first meeting and do some prep work, then the second meeting will be actual discussion. September topic: Hate vs. Love: Which has the greatest impact on our society? More information will be forthcoming.
Extensions: This quarter, I didn't teach a middle school extension. Next quarter, I will offer Journalism, which will focus on not only publishing the weekly Frankfort Tribune, but we will be adding multi-media news coverage as well. I am looking forward to getting this started.
Extracurricular:
I will be coaching the middle school Future Problem Solving team this year. We are going to start meeting on Mondays in a week or two. I am looking for four or five students in grades 5 and 6 to compete in the Junior Division, and four or five 7th and 8th graders to compete at Governor's Cup.
Quick Recall/Academic Team head coach will be Ms. Holt. Mrs. Young will be taking care of KYA and KUNA this year.
