Here Come the Pumpkins!
With just a few weeks left before Halloween, I will finally begin to introduce my Halloween themed lessons and activities. While I'd love to do it all month long, I need some aspect of order and peace in my classroom and just the mention of this holiday can send some of my little friends into a frenzy. It's best to approach this in small doses...
We worked through another letter this week (Ee), and I introduced the number two alongside the concept of "making pairs." If you get the chance, ask your child to bring you a pair of ______, and review that a pair means "two." We will continue to work on this concept some more throughout the month.
This week, I will introduce our Shape of the Month, the triangle. I will give the children craft sticks to construct one independantly after I model how to build the 3 sided shape. It helps extend the concept of the shape, and develop their spatial reasoning skills...plus it's always fun to use your hands with math! The triangle will also be extended into a painting project that integrates our colors of the month; wanna guess what it is? ;)
We have another shortened week, but a few things to keep in mind:
- Havenwood will be CLOSED Thursday and Friday.
- Morning drop off time can be a little hectic, and while I try to check all the bags, sometimes items not already inside your child's folder get missed. If you have something unusual that needs to be taken out (like a donation or MAO lunch), try to remember to give Mrs. Leonard or Mrs. George a heads up during drop off that there's something important that needs to be removed from your child's bag...don't want to miss anything!
- Picture Day is next week, and order forms were sent home. Be sure to send those back completed if you are purchasing school pictures!
One of our FAVORITE finger plays is "5 Little Pumpkins." See if your child can show you this one:
5 little pumpkins, sitting on a gate. (5 fingers resting on forearm)
The first one said: "Oh my it's getting late!" (hands on cheeks)
The second one said: "There are witches in the air." (point to the sky)
The third one said: "I don't care!" (cross arms over chest)
The fourth one said: "Let's have some fun!"
The fifth one said: Let's run and run and run!" (pump arms like running)
Then Whoosh went the wind, (swing arms to the side)
and out went the light, (clap hands together)
And 5 little pumpkins rolled out of sight. (roll fists over each other)
This one's a crowd pleaser...I'm pretty sure they'll be asking to do this one well into November. ;)
Have a fantastic week!
