The Tiger Times
Week of April 9th through April 13th
Hello Tiger Family!
This week's #TESOurHouse comes from Sloan Bales
I love that one of our Big Three this year is building student relationships. This is something that has always been such a huge factor in my classroom and my classroom community. The special relationship that you can build with your students will have such an impact. Far more than we may ever know. Those relationship are what make your students feel safe and loved, that no matter what they are coming to you with they know they have a person that cares about them. Rita Pierson states in her TED Talk about her mother's passing, and at the funeral how students were lined up tp pay their respects. What kind of legacy do you want to leave with your students?
Rita Pierson has always spoken to me as an educator. Her words are so powerful, and ring so true. "Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be." EVERY CHILD. No matter what circumstances they come to you with, no matter how frustrated we may get, EVERY CHILD deserves a champion. I have a bible verse framed in my room that I have had since I first started teaching. These are the children God have given me, God has been good to me- Genesis 33:5. I so believe that to my core. EVERY CHILD is in your room for a reason. What you do with that opportunity is up to you. Yes, sometimes I may need to go and read over it and repeat it over and over until my attitude has changed about a situation, but I truly believe EVERY CHILD deserves a champion and I want to be that champion for them.
I also love how Rita brings in the habits. The habits have truly impacted my life, especially when they are in the forefront of my mind. When she talks about how teachers are actors and actresses because we may be going through something: feeling bad, tired, etc but WE SHOW UP and TEACH ANYWAY. We carry our own weather, and we fight with everything we have got for just another day with our kids. I love when Shelley talked about how the kids get her jumping out of bed in the morning because that is how I feel! It is my purpose and opportunity to be with my kids and make an impact that day.
We have 8 marbles left. What will your legacy be? I ask this of my students all the time, but it is something for us to think about too. How do you want to be remembered. How will you be a champion for your kids?

Nuts and Bolts is our "virtual faculty meeting". Please read all information carefully and reach out if you have any questions or need clarification.
The Curriculum and Instruction department is gearing up for the 2nd annual GCISD PK-12 Learning Institute which will be held on August 9th at Grapevine High School. Last year, this experience received rave reviews from staff and included over 400 sessions taught by teachers and leaders from across our district. Please consider a session proposal to share your unique perspective and great work with colleagues from across the district. Please read the proposal form carefully before completing it, and please be sure to submit it prior to May 1st.
See Ronda Bennett for information about SAGE GT grants. The grants can be used to purchase equipment and supplies that support GT teaching, as well as for professional development opportunities for GT educators. The group's website is http://gc-sage.org.
Language Academy: please encourage your students to attend the Language Academy this summer. It is both fun and educational! Please turn all money into Ms. Wiseman's office the day you receive it.
We are participating in a district trial program for a keyboarding resource called TypingClub. During the trial period, all students K-12 have access to TypingClub via Classlink. The trial period begins now and ends July 15 at which time we will evaluate TypingClub and determine the need for purchasing a keyboarding resource for specific grade levels in 2018-2019.
Lockdown Feedback: thank you so much Tigers for a great practice.
- Two important reminders: When the drill is complete, it will be announced over the intercom that the drill is complete. We do not state anymore, "Dr. Ryan has left the building."
- Review with your students where they should go/what should they do in the event during a lockdown drill they are not in your classroom. It is important our Tigers are prepared and know what to do if they are in the restroom, walking to the nurse, etc. and there is a practice drill of any kind.
STAAR: please remember to visit the TES Site HERE for all STAAR information, which includes lunch and Specials times for April 10th and 11th. It is imperative that you are familiar with all things STAAR prior to Tuesday morning. If you have questions about a schedule, who you are testing, where you are testing, ANYTHING, please see Jade or Nicole Monday so we can help make your day -and your kids' day- as stress free as possible Tuesday and Wednesday.
After you've read Nuts and Bolts, be sure to sign here to indicate you've received and understand the information shared! Thank you!
