Here are Some Fun Things You Can Do at Home
We're two weeks in and at least two more to go. I hope everyone is staying sane. I'm planning a big surprise for the middle of the week (if I can set it up properly). Until then, here's some fun things you can do around the house.
I Went For a Hike
On Tuesday, the teachers got to go to the school to pick up stuff. I checked on our projects and they're all in fine shape waiting for your crafty little hands to come in and finish them.
Then I went to Herman Brown Park for a little hike. (It's about ten minutes from the school.)
Encounters 7 and 8
Here are the directions and you can also watch the video below.
- Open your research paper. You'll need to copy-and-paste the text in a moment.
- Find and save a clip art picture of your topic.
- Go to WordArt.com
- Click 'Create Now'.
- Up toward the left click 'Import' and paste your text into the box.
- Next, click the Shapes bar and the green 'Add Image' button.
- Upload your clip art and hit the red 'Visualize' button. This will generate your picture.
- Explore changing colors and font, hitting 'Visualize' with each changed until the WordArt is to your liking.
- When you're happy, way up at the top is a blue 'Download' button. Save it as PNG or JPG, doesn't matter.
- Go back to your research paper and insert the WordArt on the front page.
If you're having any trouble, send me an email, and I'll help you.
What You Should Be Working On
We want to be caught up when school is back in session. The more you do now, the less you have to worry about later.
Challenge of the Mind
Start putting your paper in order; add it all to the Research 2020 document.
(Encounters 6: Don't add your collages yet.)
- Title page (WordArt for Enc 7 & 8. Enc 6 if you know how to add your cover page, go ahead.)
- Your biography
- Your research poem
- The text of your paper
- The Works Cited page
If you have any trouble putting this together, let me know, and I'll help you.
When you're finished, send me an email, so I can look it over and check it off.
English 6 and English 8
Continue working with the CommonLit assignments from the District. I've added #3.
6th grade: "On Turning Ten" by Billy Collins
I don't remember turning ten, but to the speaker of the poem, it's a big deal because he's moving from the single digit ages (1-9) to the double-digit 10! If we were in class and could have a discussion, we might talk about these ideas.
8th grade: "Sympathy" by Paul Laurence Dunbar
I wish we could discuss this hugely important poem together, but until we can, take a look at this.
And don't forget StudySync. You can do these in any order you'd like.
>English 6
- Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
- A Poem for My Librarian
- Warriors Don't Cry
- We're on the Same Team
>English 8
- Speech to the Ohio Women's Conference: Ain't I a Woman
- Gaming Communities
- Letters of a Civil War Nurse
- It Ain't Braggin' If It's True
ThinkTANK and ThinkCERCA.
Am I surprised that NO ONE has touched these yet? Of course not, because you're all working on your research paper. When your paper is finished, give these a shot.
>ThinkTANK (Encounters 7)
- Cellphone Medical Test
- Iraq's Empty Boots
- The Tell-Tale Heart
>ThinkCERCA (Encounters 8)
- Muslim Children Join Their Parents in Fasting
- I Use a Wheelchair
- First Encounters with Racism
