Math Class Updates
Last week we spent a lot of time establishing our classroom community and setting up math class norms. (Ask your student about them)
Math Class Norms
Everyone can learn math
Mistakes are valuable
Try not to distract others
Listen to and share ideas
Help others understand
Take turns
Say your 'beacuses'
This week and next will be spent on creating and reading line graphs on the coordinate plane. We've already started collecting some data as a class, but look forward to next week where the students will have the opportunity to collect data about themselves and create awesome math projects!
REadIng CORNER
Currently, we are working on main idea and summarizing next week. Additionally, students are starting to use the computers to engage in the daily lessons. Next week, we will be discussing our quarter 1projects for change makers.
In order for students to use the computers, they must have turned in their technology form at the beginning of the year, as well as, the technology contract they received during their inquiry special last week.

SCIENCE NEWS
We have a Vocabulary Quiz EVERY FRIDAY. Words should be in student planner:) or on a small handout. Extra Credit is due on Friday too.
This week we are looking at the relationship between math and science. Mrs. Hunt (AIG specialist) is working with all our students on variables and graphing.

Want to Volunteer This Year? Information about Background Checks and Required Training
Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer! https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/
Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule. All trainings are held in the Board Room at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.
