Hernando De Soto was born in 1495 in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain. He was a Spanish explore and conquistador who led the first European expedition deep into the territory of modern day United States and the first documented European to have crossed the Mississippi River. He actually discovered the Mississippi River. He died in 1542.

Hernando de Soto helped Francisco Pizarro conquer Peru. In 1536 he returned to Spain as one of the wealthiest conquistadors in the era. In 1539 he set out for North America. Where he discovered the Mississippi River.
