4th Grade News
Mrs. Honiotes and Mrs. Ross 4-4-17
What We're Learning
Math - Unit 7 - The students worked on how to multiply both a whole number by a mixed number and whole number by a fraction. We learned a few different strategies to solve these types of problems. We are currently starting to work on multi-step division number stories (these are challenging!) and making sure we truly understand the problem before beginning.
Writing - Students have been busy working on their Literary Essays. So far, our focus has been on choosing a focus (symbolism, characters, or theme) and writing an effective introduction. Next week, students will be backing up their thesis statement with reasons and evidence to create the body of the essay.
Students also wrote writing goals and chose new writing partners for 4th quarter.
Science - Students have begun their Unit of Study on environments. Our go-to text will be the Nature Unleashed books created by the Missouri Department of Conservations. This week, students learned the difference between living and non-living things and what can be found in a Missouri pond, prairie, and forest ecosystem. Next week, the focus will be on specialized structures in those environments. Fingers crossed for more cooperative weather next week, as I plan on taking the classes out to explore the enviornments around us.
ASK YOUR STUDENTS ABOUT........
Writing - What book are they using for their Literary Essay and what is their focus? How are they going to back up their thesis statement?
Science - Have them tell you about some living and non-living things in Missouri. What is the difference between a pond, prairie, and forest ecosystem?
Math - Give your child a multi-step division word problem and them solve it.
Reading - Have them locate information in non-fiction text from a question you or they have developed.
