Word Mixture Problems
Greetings:
Problem #48
Let "X" = the number of ounces:
X + 16 = ( X + 16)
The first "X" represents the $1.00 per ounce sugar.
The 16 represents the $5.00 per ounce sugar (Sugar Y)
"X + 16" represents the combined generic version of sugar which is $3.00 per ounce
This first equation will allow you to write out another equation:
$1.00 * X + $5.00 * 16 = $3.00(X + 16)
I am not going to solve it for you. But what you should do is multiply everything out and solve for X. This will give you the amount of ounces of sugar that you will need to add. (Hint, drop the "$" signs and use the distributive property on the right hand side.
I hope this helps.
