PBIS Behavior Matrix Focus
- Monday - Show the book trailer and predict what they think the book will be about. Tell students that the book title is very silly because there is a very old, wise saying that says, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." Tell the students what that means and how the word others was changed to otters. Watch the full read aloud (below). After reading create a T-chart with the headings, "I would like others to..." and "So I will..." Ask students how would they would like to be treated. Write it on the chart and ask, "So we should treat others that way?" Ask another students using that previous student's example if he or she would like to be treated like that. When writing the responses, write the student's name next to it to provide ownership and encourage more answers.
- Tuesday - Review chart from yesterday. Show this video (parts from the book yesterday). Have students share how they would like to be treated. Have students illustrate and write using this page.
- Wednesday - Review what happened in the story from Monday through these questions: Why was Mr. Rabbit worried about his new neighbors? (He didn’t know anything about otters. He had a bad experience with Mrs. GRRR as a past neighbor.) Have you ever felt worried about meeting new people? (Answers may vary - maybe at a new school or neighborhood, or with meeting older or younger kids at school) What can you do to get to know someone new? (Answers will vary.) How did owl encourage Mr. Rabbit to get over his fear and make friends with the otters? (Shared an old saying “Do Unto Otters as you would have Otters do unto you.”) What does that mean to Mr. Rabbit? (Answers will vary – friendly, polite, be honest, be considerate, be kind, cooperate, play fair, share things, won’t tease, apologize, forgiving.) Who are our neighbors at school? How should we treat our school neighbors? (Answers will vary. Encourage students to think about the kids that are younger and older in the school.) Why do you think the author titled the book Do Unto Otters? (It sounds like “do unto others.”) What is it based on? (The first part of the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.) What are some examples of ‘doing unto others’? (Answers will vary.) How can we encourage others to be kind to other students in our school? (Answers will vary but should relate back to some of the key manners from the story.)
- Thursday - Explain that the golden rule is an idea of improving relationships with those around us. The most common form of the golden rule is "do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Reference the book from Monday: How did Hare's decisions and actions set a good example? Teach your students the following song (if you are happy and you know it): With your friends and family, show respect. With your friends and family, show respect. If you are respectful and you know it, then your life will really show it, with your friends and family, show respect. Role play a couple of these examples.
- Friday - Review the book. Have the class come up with their definition of the word "manners" (could be...treating people with respect by saying and doing nice things). Have students brainstorm ways to show good manners in school. Hang up definition for all to see. Have each student illustrate and write one way to show good manners.

Picture Book Recommendation of the Week
Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners by Laurie Keller
“Do not do to others that which would anger you if others did it to you.” In her smart, playful style Laurie Keller highlights how to be a good friend and neighbor—simply follow the Golden Rule!
—Socrates (the Greek philosopher), circa 470-399 B.C.
Mr. Rabbit’s new neighbors are Otters.
OTTERS!
But he doesn’t know anything about otters. Will they get along? Will they be friends?
Just treat otters the same way you’d like them to treat you, advises Mr. Owl.
Motivational Quote of the Week
What the Principal is Reading
Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
Got Data? Now What? by Laura Lipton, Bruce Wellman
For We Are Many (Bobiverse #2) by Dennis E. Taylor
Bob left Earth anticipating a life of exploration and blissful solitude. Instead he’s a sky god to a primitive native species, the only hope for getting humanity to a new home, and possibly the only thing that can prevent every species in the local sphere ending up as dinner.
