Third Trimester Grades and Deadlines - IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ (Calificaciones y fechas límites del tercer trimestre: IMPORTANTE, POR FAVOR LEA)
The Board approved grade recommendations made by staff on Wednesday night, which is similar to what the Sequoia Union High School District decided. For each class, students who have completed 60% or more of their assignments will pass the class. The report card will say, “Pass.” Less than 60% of the work completed will say, “Incomplete.” Teachers may also include comments. There will also be a standard note on every report card that says something about at-home learning during COVID-19.
We understand that due to different circumstances and adjusting to the at-home format students have been submitting work late and we have been understanding. In order for us to meet our deadlines and give the teachers time to grade, please note the following hard deadlines:
All late work from prior weeks and assignments given the week of May 18 are due by 11:59 pm on Saturday, May 23. Any work assigned the week of May 25 is due by 11:59 pm on Saturday, May 30. A reminder again that if you are submitting late work, you need to notify your teacher so the teacher knows to grade it.
Great job to everyone last week. Keep it up! It is required again to submit attendance daily by 10 am and go to each teacher’s office hours at least once this week. A reminder that again this week staff have training on Tuesday and Wednesday morning so they will not be available for morning office hours.

We are close to finalizing all of our end-of-the-year collections/pickups. We are trying to consolidate them as much as possible, but some things will need to be dropped off/picked up at different times for a variety of reasons. Some pieces have to be coordinated with The District, so once we have those final pieces in place we will give you all of the details. Thanks for your patience.
Start looking around for library books and books from teachers’ classroom libraries. Those drop offs could start as early as Monday, May 18. Hopefully by next Sunday we should be able to address all of the other things you want to know about: Musical instruments, yearbooks, textbooks, Chromebooks, Honor Roll items, PE clothes, etc.
Some of you expressed your disappointment regarding my announcement of a virtual graduation, so I would like to share how we came to that decision. We feel that it is important to do something to honor the Class of 2020. Our options were unfortunately limited. We are not allowed to do a graduation ceremony where everyone is in their car and drives through. Also, it would be too challenging logistically because we have over 250 students. We talked about waiting until later in the summer, but it if you listen to all of the news reports it doesn’t sound like bigger gatherings will happen until sometime in 2021. We already know school will look different in the fall with less students in classrooms and at school at a time, so again this idea of waiting to do the graduation in-person wouldn’t happen this year. Also, once students move on to high school they will “be over” middle school and generally won’t want to come back for an eighth grade ceremony.
So given all of those reasons that is why we are proceeding with a virtual graduation. On the plus side, we will allow all eighth graders to participate due to the pandemic even if they didn’t meet the required gpa since they didn’t have a chance to raise their gpa this trimester. Because it will be pre-recorded, everyone will be able to have a copy of it and more of your friends and family members will be able to see the graduation.
We will all gather online at the same time as graduation would have been, Friday, June 5, at 6 pm. You will still get gowns to wear, we will be giving out awards, etc. We are close to finalizing the last details and will provide those next Sunday.
Many of you have been asking me if you will get to keep a Chromebook like last year’s class. I found out this week that the answer is: Yes! The week after graduation when you return your gown and Chromebook, we will give you your diploma and a Chromebook.
We are looking forward to our incoming sixth graders! The link below includes all kinds of information and has been updated if you have already seen it. If you missed the information sessions or want to review them again, we recorded them. Have you made your elective selections yet? They are due this coming Friday. (Please don’t pick the same elective seven times. You won’t get that elective. You need to rank each choice). Summer Bridge will be happening virtually, so make sure you fill out the application if you haven’t already. The application and more information can be found in the link below.
¿Ya has hecho tus elecciones electivas? No obtendrás esa electiva.
If you have a sixth or seventh grader who is currently in grade level math, doing well, and not feeling challenged by the work and tests, then you may want to consider taking the challenge test(s) to advance to an accelerated class. 6th graders who qualify will have 2-3 hours of summer work each day to make up missed curriculum. 7th graders who qualify and elect to take Algebra will have to take two math classes and no elective.
Please complete this form this week if you are interested. Those already in accelerated math do not need to complete this form. They will automatically be moved to the next accelerated math class.

What To Ask/Say During Required Office Hours (Qué preguntar / decir durante las horas de oficina requeridas)
Some of you are not sure what to say when you attend the required office hours. Here are some suggestions:
Say hello to the teacher and ask how the teacher is doing. (Say hi to the other students as well).
“I am behind on my assignments. Can you please explain which assignments I should make up and which ones I shouldn’t worry about?”
“I can’t find (name the assignment) in Google Classroom. Can you please show me?”
"Can you please help me. I don’t understand (name of assignment).” Be prepared to explain what specifically you don’t understand about the assignment. Don’t say everything! Be specific.
“Can you please go over (problem number or concept)?”
“I am overwhelmed with all of the work. Can you please help me to come up with a schedule to help me organize my time?”
“Can you please provide me feedback on (name the completed assignment or you can ask this more generically about how you have been doing on assignments during at-home learning)?”
“Do you have any extra tips or is there anything else I should know about the assignments this week?”
“Can we please setup a time to speak privately? I have some specific challenges/circumstances I need you to be aware of.”
“Can we please work on (name the assignment) together right now?”
Again, these are just ideas. If you have not been regularly completing assignments then you should not just be popping into office hours to say hi. You should be there to work on assignments with teachers and/or ask questions.
If you are turning in late assignments your teachers don’t always know to go back and look at them, so you need to let them know. An email would be really helpful so they know to grade the assignment. If you have a bunch of late assignments then include them all in one email. Here is a sample email you can send:
Hi (Name of Teacher),
I have completed (name of assignment/assignments). Can you please check my work and change my grade when you have time?
Thank you,
(Student Name)
Gracias,
(Nombre del estudiante)

Improved Process for Food Distribution at RCSD Sites (El proceso para la distribución de alimentos en los sitios de RCSD ha tenido algunos cambios)
Redwood City School District (RCSD) has streamlined and improved its school meal distribution process as it balances safety for both families and employees with continuing to provide this essential service.
Meals at Ford, Garfield, Hoover, and Roosevelt Sites
Serving days will be on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays only.
On Wednesday of every week, families will be able to also pick up meals for Thursday and Friday at the same time as the sites will be closed Thursdays and Fridays.
The meals that will be provided will continue to be breakfast and lunch.
The schedule will continue to be 10:30 to 11:30 am.
All families will need to continue complying with staff to maintain their physical distance.
Any child who is under 18-years old can get food. The child does not need to be a student in RCSD and does not need to be present anymore per a waiver from the USDA.
Frozen entrees will continue to be provided as drive-thru brown bags, which means families can pick them up and take them home to heat up.
As a reminder, families are asked not to park or get out of their cars as staff will be out front ready with the meals to be picked up. Families just need to pop the trunk and staff will place the meals in the trunk.
