Colt Corner
Colleyville Middle School
November 4, 2022
Colts,
I love the month of November because of the many opportunities that we get to be thankful. For me, it is easy to be grateful every day at CMS because there are endless reminders of the positive things happening at Colleyville Middle School. Our Colts and staff bring a smile to my face daily when I see them interacting with one another and also as they find ways to extend kindness to others in our community. During this time of year, we will have opportunities to help others in need around our community and beyond. Our student leadership groups including our Student Council (StuCo), National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), Peer Assisted Leadership (PALs), and Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) groups are heading up our annual food drive. This year, CMS and our Dad’s club are taking up donations for pantry staples in partnership with Grace Food Drive (see info below) to give back to our community.
I hope you jump into the fun with your Colt and carve out some time to get some items together to give back to our community and those in need during the holiday season. Any giving big or small, is a wonderful lesson for our Colts about positively contributing to our community. As always thank you for partnering with us as we Build an Excellent School Together!

Do you have a relative who has served, or is currently serving our country? If so, we would like to honor them in our Veterans day slideshow. Please email jeanie.pavliska@gcisd.net any picture(s) of the military honoree, preferably in uniform, by Wednesday, November 9.
Please include the photo, name, branch of military, when/where they served, and the name of the CMS student/staff that the veteran is related to. We will have a continuous slideshow running in the hallways on Friday, Nov. 11.
Spelling Bee Qualifier
Grace Food Drive
November 9th-16th our CMS Student Leadership Organizations are partnering with our CMS Dad's Club to host our annual Grace Food Drive. Grace is an organization that provides perishable and non-perishable food to individuals and families in need.
This year, Grace has shared that they are in need of pantry staples, so we are asking students to donate specific items by grade level:
Sixth Grade - instant mashed potatoes, sugar
Seventh Grade - salt, dried beans
Eighth - flour, rice
The grade level with the most donated items will receive an extended lunch! Students can give their items to Dad's Club during morning drop off or put them in boxes placed at the entrances (main, bus, band hall) and Learning Commons.

Preferred Participation Consent for Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention
As required by federal and state law, we will soon begin presenting a personal safety curriculum to middle school students. GCISD uses the Play It Safe! ® program to teach this curriculum. Play It Safe! ® is a child abuse awareness and prevention program that incorporates age-appropriate scripts and movies to teach children how to reduce the risk of sexual and physical abuse, and sexual assault. It teaches them to recognize potentially abusive behavior, provides the tools to respond to threatening situations, and encourages them to report abuse to a trusted adult. It is presented by The Women’s Center of Tarrant County, Inc. which uses trained volunteers to present the program using videos and scripted discussions at an age-appropriate level. Play It Safe! ® meets the State and Federal guidelines for curriculum addressing personal safety issues, child sexual abuse and pedophiles. The GCISD School Health Advisory Committee has reviewed and recommended these programs for all GCISD schools.
Our schedule for showing the Play It Safe Curriculum this year is as follows:
6th grade “Sexual Harassment”- November 8th, 2022
6th grade “Survivors of Abuse- March 8th, 2023
7th grade “Healthy Relationships”- October 5th, 2022
7th grade “Can’t Take It Back” - November 30th, 2022
7th grade “Abuse of Power” - February 21st, 2023
The purpose of this personal safety presentation is to provide the students with information and practical skills to reduce their risk of being in dangerous and/or abusive situations. They will learn how to recognize, react to, and report those situations. This one-hour program is presented in an age-appropriate, non-threatening manner through the use of stories, group discussions, and an age-appropriate movie.
We are hosting a parent preview on September 29 at 10:00 AM via Zoom. The recording is posted to the CMS counseling web page titled “Play it Safe! Middle School Parent Preview 2022”
Videos and scripts will be available for parents to preview from 9/22/2022 to 10/7/2022. https://vimeo.com/showcase/7535617 Password: GCISD2022
