Onward....
Parents / Community-
Wow, the last day of school is quickly approaching. This is a bittersweet time as we let our 5th graders go, but anticipate the summer months ahead. I would like to encourage all of you to develop a plan with your children that will extend their learning into June, July and August. Take time to investigate community offerings and activities that cater to development of their skills and knowledge. It is so important to encourage our students in ways that develop them into life long learners. Summer should be fun, but don’t ignore the teachable moments and possibilities to extend learning during this time. With that said, I hope you will have a rewarding last few days of school and a safe summer. All of us at CPE want to thank you for your support and understanding this year. We have made substantial strides and have enjoyed working with your children.
Sincerely,
Walt Davenport
Principal

Teacher Requests for 2019-2020
2019-20 School Year Teacher Requests
Class placement for our students is one of the most important educational decisions that we make. Therefore we put a lot of thought and experience into our decisions. We do consider your requests as a part of our decision-making, but please understand our final placement decisions are made based on your child’s past academic and behavioral performance and the goals that your child’s present teacher has set for them. Please be aware every year we experience fluctuations in enrollment which impacts staffing and teaching assignments. Teacher grade level assignments will be finalized and posted (website and in the office) before registration begins. Teacher requests will be accepted during the student registration process in August and must be based on the academic needs of your student. Forms will be available in the office. At that time, you may write your request stating your teacher preference. Be assured that we will put the same effort and thought into your child’s placement as we have in the past, ensuring a secure and productive school year for them.
Be careful with the SUN!
The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that 80% of lifetime sun exposure occurs during childhood -- and that just one blistering sunburn can double the risk of getting melanoma later in life. Protect your children by following these tips from the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Academy of Pediatrics:
1. Limit outdoor playtime between 10a.m. and 4p.m. Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply sufficient sunscreen.
2. Apply sunscreen properly. Generously apply sunscreen 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Scented and colorful sunscreens appeal to some kids and make it easier to see which areas have been covered well. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.
3. Cover up. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the most important ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light-colored clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colors, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.
4. Keep watch on medications. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.
Set a good example for your kids. If your child sees you following sun-safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Skin protection is important for every member of the family, so team up with your children to stay protected when venturing out in the sun.

Dress Code at C.P.E.
As spring approaches, it is important to remind ourselves of how to dress safe, respectful and responsible at school. The school dress code is in the student handbook, posted on-line and available in the front office for review. Teachers will be reviewing the highlights of the dress code with students in class. All of this is done with parents as partners. We strive to minimize the amount of distractions, maintain safety and a high degree of respect by following the dress code. Here are some general guidelines to review with your child:
· Backless tops, mesh tops, sagging pants, spaghetti strap tops & halter tops, are not permitted.
· Clothing should not have inappropriate logos, sayings, advertisements etc.
· We ask that students do not wear make-up.
· Flip flop shoes without a heel strap are not allowed.
· Longer shorts are preferred (minimum 3 inches from the knee is a general guide).
· Undergarments should be covered at all times.
Reminder
*There is another drop off area for grades 1-5*
The CPE parking lot between 7:30 and 7:55
resembles LAX international airport during a holiday weekend. Here are some things you can do to help the situation:
· Pull as far forward in the circle as possible before unloading.
· Say your “goodbyes” and “I love you’s” before unloading.
· Have students exit from the right hand side of the car.
· Avoid passing other vehicles.
· Remind students to walk into the building
To help with the traffic congestion this year, grades 1-5 may be dropped off and enter through the playground gate on Bush St. Parents may not enter through this gate. If parents wish to enter the school building, please go through the front entrance and sign in. Thank you for helping keep our kids safe.
