Munnaan Khan / Period 6
My dad is a very admirable man. He is the eldest of his siblings so he’s very experienced and wise. He offers very excellent advice that is filled with life lessons. My career path is medicine, and since my dad is a Doctor, he pushes me in the right direction by showing me what steps I should take to achieve my goals. I can depend on my dad because he is always there for me.
“And then a hero comes along, with the strength to carry on, and you cast your fears aside and you know you can survive, so when you feel like hope is gone, look inside you and be strong, and you'll finally see the truth, that a hero lies in you.” – Mariah Carey
I think this quote means that although there are examples of heroes in this world, we should realize that there is also a hero inside of us as well. Many people don’t realize their own potential. If we have the courage to step up and look past our fears, we can do great things and become the very type of hero Mariah Carey referred to. You just have to find it.
This relates to Beowulf because the hero himself did not even flinch at the name of Grendel. He showed great bravery and courage by facing him.
I think my dad also showed great bravery back when he was eighteen. At the time he lived in Pakistan and was applying for medical school. The military had much influence on the way things work there, and a new rule was passed that forced medical school applicants to serve two years in the military in order to be accepted. My dad showed courage because he stepped up against this injustice. Others wouldn’t dare to step up, but my dad took this to court. In the end, he was the only med school student in his class that did not have to serve in the military.
