Rules to "Google" By
Do's and Dont's in the Virtual World
Simple Practices to Virtually Show Your Respect for Others
As access and use of the internet become more popular, users will need to find a way that the same "social graces" that we learned as children carry over into our online worlds. It is important that each individual learn to follow the golden rule in a virtual setting. The golden rule states that one should “do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” This guiding principle embodies the RESPECT that is necessary to support online learning, interaction, and communication. When one has this RESPECT for other digital citizens, it prevents inappropriate conduct and facilitates a safe and supportive learning environment.
Respect Yourself
Even though the person on the other end of the email, social media post, or online community does not know you and may never meet you...be true to yourself! Love and respect yourself to represent your true and authentic self.
Respect The Thoughts and Ideas of Others
As one matures in life, it becomes easier to understand the perspective and viewpoints of others who have different backgrounds than your own. In a virtual world, it is even more important to respectfully disagree with others and express your own thoughts in a tone and way that is not divisive or hurtful.
Respect People's Time
Everyone has different draws on their time and attention. When sending emails, posts, and other information be sure to honor the recipients' time by quickly expressing your thoughts, needs, or questions. It is also important not to copy or send correspondence that is not relevant or necessary.
