Online Ethics: A set of morals that decide how it is acceptable to act while using technology
Digital media plays a large role in our lives everyday whether we are aware of it or not. We use it to connect with friends and family. We use it to complete school assignments. We use it to entertain us. We are surrounded by it and because of this we need to learn to use it safely.
Digital Footprint and Reputation
Consequence: The effect of something that happened earlier
Everything you put on the internet is permanent. Though you may think that a certain comment or picture was deleted, it's still there, even if you can't see it anymore. Because of this fact, we need to careful about what we do. One nasty comment or inappropriate picture could ruin your future. For example, a college might not accept you or you could be turned down at a job interview. Keep this in mind before you do anything you might regret.
Relationships and Communication
Double Standard: A rule that is unfairly applied to different people or groups of people
Meeting people online can be fun but it can also be dangerous. Though it is interesting to learn about others and connect with strangers on social media, there are still things that you need to look out for. Just like your mother told you not to hop in the car with the man who offered you candy, be wary of people who ask for personal information or seem too inquisitive about private details. You never know who could be behind the screen.
Cyberbullying
Upstander: A person who supports and stands up for someone else
Bystander: A person who does nothing when they witness something happen
Offender: A person who has malicious intent to hurt or damage someone
Why is it important to be an upstander? Mainly, because it is the right thing to do. We should stand up for others who can't or are unable to defend themselves. By doing this we can help lessen bullying and violence. Usually, when someone stands up to the offender, the other person backs down and gets the message that they need to stop. Also, by being an upstander, we can set a good example for others.
