What's Going on in our Class?
We have been very busy this week. Students took their posttest over balancing equations and number sense on Tuesday. If you noticed that your child had a low score this is a sign that they need to continue working on their basic math facts at home. I have noticed that many of the students in our class rely on using their fingers to find the answer rather than having it memorized. As math gets harder throughout the year, it will be very important that they are able to answer their basic math facts quickly. We also started our module on place value this week. We will be continuing to work on place value over the next few weeks.
In reading we worked on different questioning techniques. Students learned how to ask thin and thick questions. Thin questions can be easily answered in the text. While thick questions require more thinking and searching to answer the question. Next week we will begin our social studies unit which focuses on democracy. Students will need to bring in a box the size of a cereal box or smaller by Wednesday, September 21st to help us create box city. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
In writing students worked on using the writing process while free writing. They also focused on using correct capitalization in their writing. As well as adding details to their writing. Next week we will continue to work on the writing process as well as integrating our social studies unit into writing.
