FROM THE DESK OF MR. RIFE

This school year is flying by! It is already the Holiday Season. Let's wrap up this semester on a positive note and finish strong. Good luck to our in season student-athletes participating in basketball, wrestling and cheerleading. Please come support our music programs this month for the Holiday Concerts.

Jon Rife, Principal

OTSEGO Community Reads Initiative!

Before the students leave for Winter Break, they will be given the book, Choosing Courage by Peter Collier. It is theirs to keep and they are encouraged to read it. Copies of the book will be gifted to community agencies, like local EMS and fire departments, too. The Medal of Honor Foundation provided the book for teachers at then end-of-year Professional Development.

We would also like to personally thank Shelen Stevens and the Weston Public Library for donating over 1200 books for this initiative. She has been a major part of helping put this together and we couldn't have done it without her. Thank You Shelen.

This book is the first selection for the Community Reads Initiative (CRI) as it reflects the goals and themes of the 2017-2018 school year "Be An Everyday Hero". A new book will be selected every year.

One of the goals of the CRI is to build community connections through a shared reading experience. Faculty and staff are not being asked to do anything. The CRI is encouraging everyone to read the book and participate in conversations in and around the community.

2018 Washington DC Trip Informational Packet

We still have room for 8th grade students to attend the Washington DC trip next year! Please register online if you are interested in going. We will have some fundraising opportunities in the spring to lower the cost for all students. The money raised will be evenly distributed to all students who attend. The cost listed on the website is the most we could pay, any money raised will lower the cost for everyone!

In The Classroom

Knights in Shining Armor

Knight In Shining Armor Nominations

Please use the following form to inform OHS Student Council about a family in need within the school district. While the family does not need to have students in the district, we do ask that they are a member of the Otsego Community. Please use this form to share information about their current situation as well as how they can best be assisted.

Please be sure to understand that while Knight in Shining Armor (KISA) would love to help all community members in need, we are still a new program, and may not have the funds to do so. With that being said, we will consider each request on a case by case basis. Filling this form out does not guarantee that we will be able to assist the family, but we will try our hardest to do so!

Here are some things that we have done with KISA funds:

  • School supplies were purchased for multiple families.
  • Gas money has been provided to get to and from medical treatment.
  • Food cards have been provided to help families afford meals while going through medical treatment.
  • Cash donations have been made to families to help assist in paying bills during medical treatment.
  • Gift cards and supplies have been provided to help make ends meet after housing emergencies have occurred.

Please refer to this link at any point during the year as a need arises, and KISA will do their best to help out!

GPA CALCULATION AND HONOR ROLL

At the end of each quarter, Grade Point Averages (GPAs) are calculated. Students that earn a GPA of 3.50 and higher are placed on the quarterly honor roll. Below is an explanation of how the GPA is calculated and an example to show how it may work.

Formula:

Sum of (grades multiplied by credits) divided by the sum of credits

Grades:

A=4

B=3

C=2

D=1

F=0

Credits:

Core Course=1

Special Course=.5 (Physical Education=.25)

Example:

If Jon Doe's Q1 grades were:

LA=A

Math=B

Science=B

Social Studies=B

Art=A

Chorus=A

FCS=A

Phys Ed=A

The formula to calculate his grades looks like this:

Sum of grades x credits (4x1+3x1+3x1+3x1+4x.5+4x.5+4x.5+4x.25=20) / sum of credits (1+1+1+1+.5+.5+.5+.25=5.75) = 3.48 GPA

GPA's are not rounded up, so a student could get a 3.49 and not make the honor roll.

If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact the school counselor.

USING GOOGLE APPLICATIONS FOR PERSONAL USE

Many students have used Google docs and other Google applications for personal, non-academic purposes. Technically, all Google applications and the Chromebook are for academic purposes only. While a student having a friendly chat with friends via the school device or applications won't necessarily warrant disciplinary action, everything typed into the Chromebook or a Google application can be viewed by the school and anything inappropriate will result in disciplinary action.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

This year we have the following over the counter medications listed on the enclosed document stocked in each office. Please fill out the form and return to school with your child. We are hoping to cut back on parents needing to bring medication in and/or prevent sending students home. Hopefully this makes it easier on parents, teachers and staff.

Several students have been bringing cough drops with them to school without a note. Students may not take these without written permission from a parent/guardian. We have this listed on the form as well.
