From The Music Room
What are they up to?
New Year, New Start
Welcome back Goodrich families! I hope you had a fun and restful winter break. 2017 has started out without a hitch and I can't wait for the rest of this year. Below are just some of the things that we are working on, so please read and feel free to ask your child questions about it and see what they can tell you.
Kindergarten
They have just started their instrument and rhythm reading unit. They will combine the skills they have learned throughout the year by keeping a steady beat while playing quarter notes and rests on a variety of unpitched percussion instruments.
1st
We are studying all about ballet and suite music. They have enjoyed learning about the characters and story lines, as well as the musical form of each piece. There are many rhythm reading exercises, steady beat activities and movement lessons that go along with this unit and the kids are having a great time while learning.
2nd Grade
Students in second grade are learning all about the musical fairy tale, Peter and the Wolf. This story includes characters that are represented by different instruments in the orchestra, allowing students to hear the different pitches and timbres the instrument families make.
3rd Grade
These students have just learned the notes of the lines and spaces of the music staff and are preparing to learn how to apply this knowledge on pitched percussion instruments in the classroom. It is exciting to see the transition from solfege, (do, re, mi...), to A, B, C...
4th and 5th
We are starting the recorder unit and can not wait to earn our karate belts and metals. During this unit students are combining all of the musical knowledge they have gained over the year. This includes rhythm reading, note reading, hand eye coordination, inner ear listening, sight-reading and cooperation with a partner or team. The kids really enjoy this unit and it is one of my favorite things to teach.
6th Grade
We are becoming very knowledgeable about the guitar and are almost ready to go on tour! The students have been learning tablature and reading chord symbols throughout the unit so far and will soon be composing their own songs using the chords they have learned. That is one of my favorite parts of the unit because they are doing the creating and they always come up with some great tunes!
5th and 6th Grade Chorus
Our next concert will be here before you know it, stay tuned for more information on our May 4th concert! If there are 5th or 6th grade students that were not in chorus last semester and would like to join this semester they are more than welcome to. Have them come see me for a permission slip and have it returned to me on or before January 20th.
