Last Day of the Readathon
We have concluded our 2017 Readathon and we hope your children have enjoyed participating! We’ve seen some wonderful pictures of our students reading, and are excited that our halfway bubbles are filled with fabulous mid-way reading minute marks. We hope that our end results will allow us to have our character dress up day! All reading logs are now due. They must be in by Monday, March 20 to get a prize. A big thank you to Mrs. Hirschhorn and Mrs. Tregoning who have done so much to make sure this event is special for our students!
Pennies for Patients
This week kicks off our Pennies for Patients program to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! We are asking for everyone’s help to raise awareness and collect funds to benefit this organization whose mission is to find cures for blood cancers and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Each child has received a coin collecting box to take home. Class boxes of coins will be counted each week. The last day for collections is on March 29. Classes are competing to win a pizza party lunch.
Donations are also accepted online here. Online donations are a great way to get out of town family and friends involved! Thank you in advance for helping LLS to create a world without blood cancers!

Updated 2017–2018 School Year Calendar
The Board of Education adopted an updated calendar for the 2017–2018 school year at its February 27 meeting. The first day of school will be September 5, 2017, for students and the last day will now be June 12, 2018.
The Board of Education originally adopted a calendar for the 2017–2018 school year at its December 13, 2016, meeting. However, immediately subsequent to the Board’s action, MCPS and other counties received communication from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) that clarified the state’s position that school districts would need to conclude all possible instructional make-up days due to emergency and weather-related closings by the June 15 timeframe set by Governor Larry Hogan’s executive order.
The Board also adopted a contingency plan that identifies dates that could be used as instructional days, if necessary, to make up school due to emergency and weather-related closings. Two of these days are the first two days of the scheduled spring break, March 26 and 27, 2018. One day, January 26, 2018, would replace a professional development day. Additional contingency dates would extend the school year until June 15, 2018.
