News from Strode College
Exciting times ahead for Strode students - April 2022
Dr John Revill joins Strode as the new Principal
John will be taking over from current Principal Katy Quinn who is moving on as CEO and Principal at City of Portsmouth College. Katy said: “Strode College is an amazing College, with many unique strengths, such as its passionate staff, innovation and excellent student progression."
John said: “I’m passionate about ‘Transforming Lives Through Learning’ and I am absolutely delighted to be joining Strode College at such an exciting time for the College’s future development.
Strode College is just about to embark on a major investment in its buildings and campus. Alongside its excellent A Level provision, it was also one of a select few colleges in England to be the first providers of the pioneering new T Levels which have been designed in collaboration with leading employers across the region."
NATIONAL EXAM CONTINGENCY DAY
TO ALL STUDENTS SITTING EXAMS SUMMER 2022
The National Exam Contingency Day for Summer 2022 has now been confirmed as Wednesday 29th June 2022. Please ensure that if you are a student with examinations this summer, that you are aware of this date and keep it free.
If for any reason exams have to be deferred, for example for a national day of mourning, any exams that were due to take place on that day could be deferred to 29th June.
Any student who cannot make themselves available on that day will potentially be marked absent and could get zero marks for that paper.
Tips to successful revision!
LOOK AFTER YOURSELF
- Sleep between 8 - 10 hours a night
- Drink lots of water (not high energy/sugary drinks)
- Eat slow-release carbs (brown bread, rice, pasta, fruit + veg)
- Exercise for at least 30 mins a day
- Take breaks and make time to unwind (shower, bake, or watch a funny film)
AVOID
- Using digital devices 30 mins before bed
- Drinking coffee, tea or energy drinks in the evening (these will hinder sleep)
- Negative or stressed people
- Comparing yourself to others
- Cutting out all the fun in your life
- Setting ridiculous goals
STRATEGIES
- Classical music is known to boost brain power. It is less distracting than tracks with lyrics.
- Break your revision down into small chunks (see apps article)
- Set revision goals and treat yourself if you achieve them.
- Go for walk - fresh air alleviates stress
Spot the Difference!
A Levels are more academic and classroom-based and offer wider options if you're not totally sure what you want to do later. BTECs tend to be vocational and practical and focused on a particular career path.
Are BTEC as good as A Levels?
Universities typically regard:
BTEC Lvl 3 Ext. Diploma = three A Levels
BTEC Diploma = two A Levels
Ext. Certificate = one A Level
Do check university course requirements as some need one or more A Levels as well as the BTEC.
I've chosen two A Levels but unsure of my 3rd subject!
As part of Strode's application process, we can recommend subject and course combinations. if you are looking to progress on to a Russell Group University, you will also be made aware of the 'facilitating subjects' designated by them.

Understand T Levels? Should I study one after my GCSEs?
If you have an interest or rough idea about the industry you would like to work in, a T-level offers a great balance of around 80% of their learning time in the classroom, and 20% (around 45 days) working in the real world on an industry placement with an employer. We will find the Industry Placement(s) for you.
