~Miss Perry~

Hello, parents! My name is Sarah Perry, and I am SO excited to be working with you and your student in the upcoming semester. In May of 2013, I graduated from Truman State University with my Bachelors of Arts in Communication Studies and a minor in Mathematics. I will be earning my Masters of Arts in Elementary Education at Truman State University this upcoming May. Last semester, I was given the opportunity to work as a long-term substitute in a third grade classroom in Kirksville, Missouri. While working each day with the students and the faculty at Ray Miller Elementary, I was exposed to the standards to which third grade students are held. I am tremendously excited to see how the curriculum used in Kirksville is both different and similar to that which is used in the North Kansas City School District. I can’t wait to spend the spring semester learning and growing with your student! Please feel free to contact me at with any questions or concerns you may have throughout the semester. After only a few days, I am tremendously impressed with the work of all the students in Miss Parmer's class.

For the L*O*V*E* of Learning!

In Writers' Workshop, we are finishing up Unit 4. Students will be writing a book review. The writing will be completed entirely in class. Students will then create their own "Reading Rainbow" book recommendation video. This week we have spent time viewing samples of Reading Rainbow book reviews and students have practiced with a partner writing them. I haven't assigned a due date as students are still reading their just right chapter book. My criteria for this book review: Can not be a graphic novel, must be fiction and must be on their reading level.

In Readers' Workshop this week we have been reviewing point of view. We have been reading a variety of texts and determining the point of view of the author. We have also examined the point of view of characters. As a class we looked at The Three Little Pigs fairy tale told from the wolf's point of view in two different versions and written by two different authors.

Students should be tracking the point of view of their main characters from their "just right" independent reading book.

In Math we have pushed back the Unit 4 district math assessment. I felt the students weren't ready to be assessed after the long winter break and the snow day. We needed to time to get back in the swing of things and we also needed to time to review. The students will be tested on January 17th. The test will consist of area, perimeter, identifying shapes, and quadrilaterals.

In Science, we are still learning about energy. This week we conducted two investigations on light energy. Ask your child to explain what they did :)

We will begin our Social Studies unit after we finish our Energy and Matter Unit in Science. Our unit will focus on Geography and we will incorporate the Winter Olympics. We will begin the unit around the 6th of February.
