March 2016

A Note from Mrs. Ehlich, Principal

With Spring right around the corner, it can be hard to keep children focused on learning. Please keep these simple ideas in mind as you encourage your child to make school a top priority.

· Make attendance job #1. Let your child know that unless they’re sick, they must go to school. Try to schedule appointments after school hours.

· Show you care. Talk about their school activities and projects. Attend as many school events as you can.

· Keep it upbeat. Set a positive example for your children, even when your own day has been difficult. If you demonstrate a positive attitude about your work, your child may feel better about their own.

Kindergarten Registration

If you have a child who will be entering 4 or 5 year-old kindergarten next year, please plan on registering them on March 3rd from 12:00—5:00 p.m. Children who will be 4 years of age on or before September 1, 2016 are eligible for enrollment in our 4K program, and those that are 5 on or before September 1, 2016, are eligible for enrollment in our 5K program in the 2016-2017 school year. Please help us by telling your friends and neighbors who have upcoming kindergarteners.

Please bring your child’s original birth certificate, current proof of residence, and a SC Certificate of Immunization.

Children registering for the 4 year-old Child Development Program will be scheduled for screening and selections will be announced prior to the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year. Children registering after screening will be placed on a waiting list.

Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars Program

Students in the 2nd through 5th grades have a chance to become a Greenville Drive 2016 Reading All-Star!

Reading improves academic success for students so this is an incredible win-win!

Each student who reads 5 books during February 15th through March 18th, fills in the reading log correctly and returns the log to school can become a Reading All-Star. All-Stars get free admission to the Sunday, May 22nd game at Fluor Field at 4:00 p.m. where they will be recognized. They will participate in a parade around the outfield, have a chance to throw the First Pitch, and receive a free T-shirt.

Testing! Testing! 1-2-3

The coming of spring has become synonymous with the coming of state standardized testing. As such, with MAP this month, we also have more complaints of stomach aches and headaches from our students. These tests can create much anxiety among elementary students. Parents - you can help with test anxiety by encouraging your students to try his/her best. Tell your child/children how giving his/her 100% best effort will show just how much he/she has learned. This is all teachers ask. Let him/her know to stop and take a deep breath or count to 10 silently when testing. It is very helpful for students experiencing anxiety to reread questions and check answers carefully. This will ensure students have done their best. Also, parents please don't keep your student at home when he or she complains of stomach aches or not feeling good during testing time. These feelings are most often caused by nervousness, not from being sick. Research has shown students perform best when testing with their everyday class and teacher. When students are absent unnecessarily during testing, it will only create more anxiety as students have to do make-up testing with a different teacher and without the comfort of classmates. I know our students are the best and the brightest around! Help them see testing is not a bad thing, but just a way for them to show everyone how smart CSF students are!
