From the Principal's Desk
Hello FDES Families,
On Wednesday, September 11th “Patriot’s Day”, our students were able to honor the heroes of 9/11. Kindergarten students were able to link the First Responders to their Community Helpers lesson. Students examined the importance of such careers as Fire Fighters, Law Enforcement, and Medicine.
Reading:
We are tasked to make sure that our students are literate readers and writers. We are equipped with teaching them to read analytically and write clear messages in different genres. It is helpful if you are able to make sure they are reading every night. We believe that if they are reading at home, it will motivate them to be prepared to read at higher levels in all subjects. Reading effectively for learning and for pleasure is such a great skill to support our students in becoming life-long learners. Thanks so much for all you do at home each day to facilitate this effort! We appreciate you!
Your Very Proud Principal,
Dr. Barbara Tucker
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) invites parents and members of the community to join GCPS staff members by participating in a review of proposed curriculum resources. Parents and community members can provide input on the proposed resources by participating in the review. The public review began Monday, Sept. 9, and runs until Friday, Oct. 4.
GCPS holds an extensive review before adopting resources for classroom use. Resources submitted by publishers were reviewed prior to the pilot by parents, community members, teachers, and administrators for alignment with the school system’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. During the next phase of the district’s review process, a public review will take place allowing all GCPS staff and members of the Gwinnett community to review student textbooks, digital resources, and associated teacher resources in Language Arts and Social Studies for select grades and courses.
The review is scheduled at the following times at GCPS' Instructional Support Center (ISC), located at 437 Old Peachtree Road NW in Suwanee.
- Monday, Sept. 9 – Friday, Oct. 4, 8 a.m.– 4 p.m.
- Thursday, Sept. 19, 5 – 8 p.m.
- Saturday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m.– 2 p.m.
Both print and digital resources will be provided for review in the hallway between Buildings 100 and 200 at the ISC during review hours. Based on all input gathered from this multi-step review, a recommendation will be made to the Gwinnett County Board of Education for adoption of resources.
SCHOOL COMMUNICATION-UPDATE
We are no longer allowed to send text messages through Messenger. For emergency needs, we will send emails through this feature only. We will also bridge these messages to our Fort Daniel Elementary Facebook page. The district will send out emergencies ONLY through the text feature, however, schools are only allowed to send emails.
We miss this feature, as it was a great way to communicate with parents and our community. However, we hope to keep you informed on our website, Fort Report Weekly News, and social media pages.
We would like to extend a BIG Thank You to our awesome V.I.P. Family! We really appreciate all
that you do!
If you are interested in volunteering on Friday mornings, please email Katie Van Voltinburg at katievanvoltinburg@gmail.com.
