Fourth and Fifth Grade PEAK

Mrs. Turner's April News

Spring Showcase

Our 4th/5th grade PEAK Showcase is scheduled for Wednesday, May 11th from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at Alexander Doniphan.

One of our gifted goals is to give students an opportunity to practice public speaking. The format for Showcase will be presentation style. Students will stand by their projects between 6:05 and 6:30 and give 5 mini presentations. You will start with your own child and then rotate through 4 other students to hear what they have to say!

In the final 30 minutes, you will have an opportunity to view student projects on a come and go basis. At the end of the evening, please plan to take your child's work home.

See Saw Online Digital Portfolio

Lots of parents still haven't signed up for Seesaw! We're adding new work all the time!

It takes just 30 seconds. Once you sign up, you can download the Seesaw Parent app for iPhone or Android, or access your child's journal on the web. Once you sign up, I need to approve you. I check the account frequently, so you should be approved quickly!

P.S. If you have more than one child using Seesaw, or have used Seesaw before, sign in and click on your profile icon > + Add Child to add this year's journal.

Curriculum update:

Over the next few weeks, 4th and 5th graders will be busy wrapping up projects and getting their work ready to share at Showcase. We can't wait to show you all that we've learned!

SCIENCE:

  • 4th grade- We moved into qualitative science with our Consumer Reports Testing Unit. Students are designing qualitative tests to conduct in class. Each student will conduct his/her own test. Students need to bring 3 different brands of their product to test (for example, three brands of chips, or pencils, or soda, etc) .

  • We will test on April 15 for the Friday class.
  • We will test April 21 for the Thursday class.

  • 5th grade- How can I use the scientific method to design and conduct qualitative experiments on the brain?

THEME: (projects)

  • 4th grade- Students are working on Public awareness campaign to bring attention to the world problem they studied.
  • 5th grade- Students are working on a project for their Brain museum exhibits.

ELECTIVES:

PEAK is getting in the maker spirit for the remaining months of the school year! We're offering students DIY choices that include sewing, coding, movie making, engineering, algebra, logic, and more! This has been high interest and engaging!

Middle School Placement

With middle school just around the corner for 5th graders, I've been getting questions about PEAK placement.

There are 3 PEAK classes at the middle level- reading, math, and science. They replace regular reading, math, and science. 5th graders take I-Ready reading and math in the fall and spring. Qualifying criteria is 95% or better on either fall or spring results. They also take the Performance Series science in the fall and spring. Same criteria- 95% or better. Parent letters regarding placement will be sent at the end of the school year.
