WHAT IS WHERE?

In the Summer of 2015, Europe experienced the largest inflow of refugees since the second world war. The Refugees are coming from the middle eastern country of Syria where millions of women, men, and children are affected by a brutal civil war between, the dictatorship of the Assad family and the Syrian Rebellion, forcing the Syrian population to move themselves to other countries nearby. Unfortunately most countries are beginning to deny the entrance of refugees due to economic and political issues.

WHY THERE?

Since the 1960s the Arabian area of the middle east was home to multiple revolutions caused by protests and conflicts. But in the year 2011 during the Arab Spring, the middle east witnessed the fragmentations of various regimes and dictatorships. The Syrian Government, under the control of the Assad family refused to step down of their dictator ship and instead began a brutal civil war within Syria starting in 2011. This war caused conflicts all over Syria especially for the terrorist group of ISIS. ISIS took this opportunity to try and take over Syria and build a dictatorial islamic government of their own. These events quickly turned into brutal war forcing many women, men, and children to flee to nearby countries like Egypt, Iraq, Turkey and Jordan. Since the population of Syria is over 22 million people, which is already too crowded for a country with 186,475 km2 worth of space, the population density of this country is 124.41peoples per every square km, making it one of the most crowded countries in the middle east. Eventually the countries that were accepting Syrian refugees were running low on resources, forcing the refugees to once migrate to other countries again, specifically in the european union. Countries in Europe including Greece, Bulgaria, Italy, and Spain are refusing entree of Syrian Refugees due to economical and political issues while they have both enough space and GDP to sustain them, for example the country of Spain has a Population density of 92 peoples per square km and a land mass of over 300,000 km2 making it able to fit most refugees. Greece Specifically is unable to house any Refugees or even take care of their own citizen since they are currently in an economical depression causing many Refugees to take shelter on dangerous and unstable islands. Other countries in the european union more north of the continent are beginning to accept a limited amount of refugees after many horrible scenes of dead children on beach shores. Some Countries in the European union are limiting the intake of Syrian refugees mostly because the countries involved fear that the large amount of migrating Syrians will alter the population ethnicity in Europe and turn the major religion of the country from Catholicism into islamism when this is not true. Even if all 4 million Syrian refugees were allowed to enter the EU the muslim population of the continent would only rise from 4% to 5% changing very little of the religious majority.

WHY CARE?

The Syrian Refugee Crises is a major issue specifically in the European Union but it is also a global issue. Countries like Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States are beginning to accept limited amount of refugees coming from Syria. War Torn countries have extremely horrible conditions, no shelter, no safety, and no food are all penalties for war, especially when the war is at your doorstep. The refugees coming from Syria have no choice but to Flee to other countries because they have no where else to go. This crises will go down in history as one of the largest refugee displacements in the history of mankind, how would other countries including Canada and the United States like to be remembered in the history books, the country which accepted less than 20,000 refugees while others accepted hundreds of thousands? Countries like the United Kingdom has 3.481 trillion Canadian dollars in GDP making it more able to house refugees than of other countries in the EU and they are only accepting just over 10,000 refugees where they have the space and money to take care of more. This event is extremely important morally and historically and should be treated with the same amount of care as other countries.
