Highlights from the VSCA Conference

I hope you all were able to attend the annual conference in Hampton! I've heard many wonderful things about the conference...I was unable to attend because I had a beautiful baby girl! The feedback is in and attendees said the keynotes, breakouts, and special sessions were incredible. I hope that those of you that attended the conference returned to school with a wealth of resources and new information to use and share with students, teachers, counselor colleagues, and dream, learn, and become more.

Our VSCA President, Brett Welch, shared some key information for all Virginia school counselors. A subcommittee of the VSCA board is in the process of developing a statewide school counselor evaluation that is designed to be in line with the ASCA model. This is a key step in clarifying and defining our professional role within our schools. Backing us up every step of the way from within the VDOE is Joseph Wharff, the newly appointed Student Assistance Systems Coordinator & School Counselor Specialist. As your Regional Area Representative (RAR), I am participating in phone conferences with Joe, Brett, and other RARs as well to discuss items pertinent to school counseling in Virginia.

Mentors Make Magic Happen!

Here is an awesome opportunity for new school counselors and veteran school counselors... Interested in being connected with a mentor or serving as one? Please contact Phyllis Holliman at She's our VSCA mentoring leader and she'll pair you up with a mentor or mentee. We have so much to share and so much to learn from one another -- mentors make magic happen! Share your knowledge or learn from those with lots of experience.
