Talking with Kids in Scary Times
social emotional learning resources * october 2016
Helping Children In a Crisis • Try and keep routines as normal as possible. Kids gain security from the predictability of routine, including attending school. • Limit exposure to television and the news. • Be honest with kids and share with them as much information as they are developmentally able to handle. • Listen to kids’ fears and concerns. • Reassure kids that the world is a good place to be, but that there are people who do bad things. • Parents and adults need to first deal with and assess their own responses to crisis and stress. • Rebuild and reaffirm attachments and relationships.

Check Out Activity Guide Below.....Giving time for and helping children play during times of stress is one of the most important things you can do.This ECD Kit of activities was created to help you help young children continue to develop their skills for thinking, speaking, and interacting with people and things even when times are very difficult. We hope these fun learning activities will help to stimulate children’s eager minds, quiet their hearts, and give them hope. When you help young children feel safe and secure they can be free to learn now and in the future. .. from unicef
