Dystopian Control

We Are Not Free

"Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bullet-proof."

In the abandoned subway tunnel, after a hail of gunfire doesn't kill V, Mr. Creedy says "Die! Die! Why won't you die?... Why won't you die?" V explains that he might be human but you can never kill what he represents. The government is always trying to completely eradicate any ideas that might oppose it. In the movie, the government referred to V as a terrorist but in reality he was a liberator. We can see in our world today how the government is trying to control our thoughts and ideals to make them their own by controlling the media and what we can know.

Dystopian Paragraphs

We live in a so called “Land of the Free and Home of the Brave” but is that really true? But what is freedom? Freedom is being able to go on the internet and being able to send your friend a text without the NSA receiving a full report of what you’re doing. According to a time article published in 2013, “Your life today is has a digital signature. Where you eat, shop and travel; whom you call, e-mail and text; every website, café and museum you visit even once is all stored in great digital cloud. And you can’t delete anything, ever” (Fareed Zakaria). Constantly observed and spied on, no one has the right to say that they are free in this nation.

Our school system completely eradicates any sign of independence in the students and crushes all freedom. Students are told when to stand and sit like a pack of trained dogs and told to sing an anthem we might not even believe in. Forced to follow a certain dress code and obey the regulations placed upon us of suffer the consequences. We are being turned into robots that only know how to follow a moral code that is laid on front of us and are completely limited in our thoughts of personality and individuality based on what big brother believes is correct. No longer have any rights as soon as we pass through the doors of this establishment

We are forced to register and carry identification everywhere we go much like the Jewish people in Europe had to wear the Star of David on their clothing. This system of identification is just a way for the government to organize us the way they want us to be. Because of these I.D. cards, and the information they have on each and every one of us, we are being limited through a set of laws and rulings that deny us any free will. Why are we being restricted by these laws that big brother created? Because big brother wants to keep a watchful eye on us to make sure we don't do anything to upset him but if we break one of big brothers rules, we will suffer.

Big brother will always be watching us, forever looking for someone that will corrupt its way of life but they will never be able to take away our ideas and right to be free. A quote from the movie V for Vendetta, "Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bullet-proof" (Andy and Lana Wachowski). Big Brother may try to smother us with fear and corruption but we will carry on our values and ideas, continuing to stand out and speak our minds against the abolishing views of the government that threatens to invalidate our liberty and rights.

March of Liberation

Tuesday, June 4th 2013 at 3:30pm

206 Washington St SW

Atlanta, GA

We will come together to protest in front of the capital building and show Big Brother we won't stand for them trying to control us and hide things from us. We will speak our ideals of freedom and will not let our right be taken away from us. Bring food and water and a small first aid kit just in case of any violence brought from the police. Make sure to bring cameras to capture anything the government tries to do to put us down.

Muse

Muse - Uprising by Muse

"Uprising" by Muse

Paranoia is in bloom,
The PR, transmissions will resume
They'll try to, push drugs that keep us all dumbed down
And hope that, we will never see the truth around
(So come on)

Another promise, another seed
Another, packaged lie to keep us trapped in greed
And all the, green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined
(So come on)

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious
So come on

Interchanging mind control
Come let the, revolution takes its toll
If you could, flick the switch and open your third eye
You'd see that, we should never be afraid to die
(So come on)

Rise up and take the power back
It's time the, fat cats had a heart attack
You know that, their time's coming to an end
We have to, unify and watch our flag ascend
(So come on)

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious
So come on

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious
So come on

"They will not force us, they will stop degrading us, they will not control us, we will be victorious" (Muse). This is perfect example of why this song is dystopian related. The writers of the song wanted to propel their thoughts on how the government is trying to control our every move and how they will not stand for it”. Rise up and take the power back, It's time the, fat cats had a heart attack, you know that, their time's coming to an end, we have to, unify and watch our flag ascend" (Muse). They are stating that they will take back what was stolen from them which was their freedom. They will raise their flag of liberation and take the place of the "fat cats" and take place in a revolution that will show the world that we will not fall in obedience to the words of the government.

"And all the, green belts wrapped around our minds and endless red tape to keep the truth confined" (Muse). Money is tightly wrapping the minds of our government and narrowing their view of how the world is slowly falling apart. The red tape is muffling our voices and preventing us from questioning anything the government thinks is right. Muse is saying that the media is also controlled by the government in that it only spoon feeds us images that portray it in a good way and hides all the lies that are being covered up by propaganda.

Dystopian trends

The Westboro Baptist church can be considered a cult with dystopian trends. They believe they are superior to everyone else and completely shun anybody who doesn’t think the same way. There have been some occasions where Westboro members have even disowned their children because they did not believe in their cruel methods. They protest anything that thy think is wrong and proclaimed that the entire world is going to burn is Hell except for them. Westboro has even taken it upon themselves to protest the funerals of soldier and planned to picket the funerals of sandy springs children claiming the Connecticut’s gay marriage laws angered God so he retaliated with the mass murder of children.

Sonnet

We stand up to pledge our flag

With liberty and justice for all

Then we sit and open our bags

Oh how I wish this building would fall

Homework given every night

Every night without a wink of sleep

No sign of freedom in sight

This building makes me want to weep

Do your work or get in trouble

They say to follow the rules

Hurry and finish on the double

You must obey at school

Not a soul who cares

What burden to bear
