In 1859 - 1871 steamboats were usually found on the Mississippi, Missouri and the red river. The reason they used steamboats was because they wanted to reduce prices and cut down travel time for transported goods between Winnipeg, Manitoba and St.Paul Minnesota.
Important inventors
Robert Fulton invented the first successful steamboat, but many others contributed to the invention like John Fitch. John Fitch was the first man to build one. The reason his was not successful was because it was to expensive to build and operate.
Why is it important to ND?
They had steamboats because they needed to carry thousands of pounds of freight on their trade route. Steamboats were the most important thing to North Dakotas trade route development in this time period.
