The Question is Are We?

In multiple conversations this week with different people we discussed the concept of "We Are One". These conversations have run through my head all week and I’ve had this inner dialogue going on about what this means to me personally and what this means to us at CN Jr/Sr HS. Is this a mantra, a catch phrase, a slogan, a vision, a mission? Do we embrace it? Do we act upon it? Do we share it? Do we doubt it? Do we mock it? Do we even believe it?

Without a doubt, to be successful as a school, we must build, and be a part of a strong team. What impacts one of us, impacts all of us. But, we must be willing to admit, that as a team- we are in the same boat. In the image below, the people on the right do not view the problem as their own. When you look at their half of the boat, they are high and dry. They are not getting wet right now; and they don’t seem too concerned with helping those on the other end.

We are stronger and better together. Let me state that again . . . WE ARE STRONGER AND BETTER TOGETHER! Are we together at CN Jr/Sr HS? We we willing to aid in finding solutions to issues, answers to questions, working to help improve rather than turning a blind eye to situations or complaining without offering to help. What does this look like? It might be as simple as lending an ear or offering advice, helping someone who is struggling find a solution, letting a teammate know that something they are doing or saying isn’t helpful, or as big as accepting that you are part of the problem and making a change. Either way, we are part of the solution in the realization that we are on the same boat - we are one team.

I will admit, I have been on the wrong end of the boat many times. I have avoided a conversation, shirked a responsibility, or ignored what is happening in hopes it will fix itself. What I have learned through all of these mistakes in dealing with situations is: 1) problems rarely, if ever, fix themselves, and 2) things are only as good as the worst behavior I am willing to accept from myself and others.

Has there ever been someone that has brought an issue to you and you have thought: “I am not getting involved in that one?” Have you ever sat by and listened to a conversation that was tearing something or someone down and while you didn’t feel the same way, you didn’t stand up to it either? Have you ever thought or said that’s a High School issue, a Junior High issue, an Elementary problem. Do we believe that students in grades 6-12 are our students or are our students the ones we have in class? Where have we shifted responsibility to others instead of owning our piece of the problem? Or, in what way have we denied that we might be part of the problem and had a “sure glad the hole isn’t on my end of the boat” attitude?

Whatever your answers may be to those questions, I encourage you to realize that no matter how small a role you think you are playing in a given situation… we are all on the same boat, we are all on the same team. There are few absolutes in this world, but one thing I am positive about is: doing nothing, helps nothing and trying to do it alone is so much harder than doing it as a team. If you know about the problem, and issue, an attitude that needs to be changed, it’s time to start owning your piece of moving forward to find a solution. We are all in this together. The quicker we realize that, the stronger we can become. I do believe WE ARE ONE and for me that ONE is Central Noble Jr/Sr High School.
