We need your help! Please make sure you are not sending your child to school even if they have mild symptoms. If your child presents with any COVID symptoms they need to stay home for 10 days and or get a COVID test. If you receive a negative COVID test they may return when they are symptom free.
The symptoms are:
· Fever/Chills
· Cough
· Shortness of breath/Difficulty breathing
· Runny nose/Congestion
· Sore throat
· Fatigue
· Headache
· Nausea/Vomiting/Diarrhea
· Muscle/Joint/Body Aches
· New loss of taste of sense of smell
If your child has been in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID please make sure you follow the guidelines for return and do not send them to school without contacting Nurse Amy first.
Close Contact/Quarantine Updated Guidance:
This week, the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) issued new guidance that allows for shortened COVID-19 quarantine timelines based on the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) most recent recommendations. The Mat-Su Borough School District will also be adopting the revised timelines.
Individuals who are expected to quarantine due to an exposure to COVID-19 may shorten their quarantine. To be able to return to school/work earlier than 14 days, individuals must comply with one of the following:
1. Ten (10) days have passed without testing and the individuals have not experienced any symptoms during the entire 10-day period. In this instance individuals may return on day 11 after exposure.
2. Seven (7) days have passed and the individual has taken a COVID-19 test and received a negative result. The test must be taken within 48 hours of the end of the quarantine (meaning no earlier than 6 days after exposure) and verification of the negative test results must be provided to the school nurse or building/department supervisor. In this instance individuals may return on day 8 after exposure.
Individuals will be required to monitor for symptoms for 14 days from the date of last exposure, and if symptoms develop, self-isolate and get tested promptly. Masks will also be required for any individual returning to school sooner than 14 days, regardless of grade level. The District’s existing mask guidelines will be followed after 14 days have passed.
Notifying Close Contacts:
Public Health contact tracers may not be able to notify close contacts at this time due to rise in cases. Because of this, contact tracers are asking people who have tested positive for COVID-19 to begin informing their close contacts of their potential exposure to the virus as soon as possible. The faster individuals begin to quarantine, the faster we can stop the spread of COVID-19.
Keeping your student at home on quarantine, if they have been exposed to COVID-19 is imperative in helping lessen the spread of COVID-19 in schools and the community. If you have any questions regarding being a close contact or need to report absences due to quarantining, please reach out to Nurse Sonja at 907-352-0417 or by email at sonja.mack@matsuk12.us.
Travel Mandate Updates:
See the updated MSBSD Student Return from Travel Guidelines or DHSS Website for updated guidance on travel mandates as it applies to students in school. High school aged students who travel out of state for more than 72 hours are not permitted to return to school until they can comply with one of the following:
1. At least 14 calendar days have passed since their return to Alaska. Health Mandate 10.1 requires residents of Alaska to quarantine for 14 days if they elect not to test for COVID-19: or
2. They receive a negative COVID-19 test, from a test taken within 72 hours of return and/or at the airport and at least five days have passed since their return to Alaska.
If you choose not to test 72 hours prior to returning to Alaska or at the airport upon arrival, students are required to complete a 14-day quarantine before returning to school.
Thank you for helping keep our school healthy and open!
Thanks,
Jen Dowd
