7th Graders Travel To Tech Interactive Museum in San Jose

In supporting the next generation of innovators, 7th grade students departed from Main Street on Thursday, February 6 at 7:00 a.m. for a field trip to the Tech Interactive Museum in San Jose. Students participated in lab settings that included the Physics of Roller Coasters and Chemicals of Innovation.

Main Street Spelling Bee Contest Convenes

Cristina Vallarez, Site Spelling Bee Coordinator, and the English Language Arts Department classroom teachers are completing the Classroom Spelling Bee Contest during the week of February 11th. The winner for each class period will then compete for the School-Wide Spelling Bee scheduled for Friday afternoon, February 21st. The final winner from Main Street Middle School will compete at the Monterey County Office of Education Countywide Bee to be held on Sunday, March 15, at Hartnell College starting at 1:30 PM.

Professional Development Opportunity For Main Street Math Teachers

Soledad Unified School District is making it possible for two math teachers from Main Street to attend the summer professional development opportunity on Visible Learning for Mathematics. The Math Department is working together to identify representation. In Visible Learning for Mathematics, educators learn how to design high-impact instruction so all students demonstrate more than a year's worth of mathematics learning for a year spent in school.


Monterey County Office of Education is hosting the training June 15 through the 17th from 8:30 to 3:30.

Soledad School District Active Transportation Grant In Partnership with the County Health Department

Last November, Main Street Middle School students participated in a Bicycle Safety Assembly in their Physical Education classes and a Walk To School Day.


Over the past two weeks, students completed a walk ability checklist survey, took a survey home for parents to complete, and also participated for 2 consecutive days with an oral survey to respond and record tallies on how students came to school (walk, bicycle, school bus, carpool, family vehicle, transit, or other ) and how students would be going home from school. Students in Digital Art and VIsual Arts classes participated in designing posters to promote Safe Routes to School. Teams of students and/or individual students creative and colorful drawings were submitted to the County Health Department as a part of a contest.


With support and time devoted by Jessica Perez, County Health Department Coordinator, and the Math, Social Studies and Arts Departments, Main Street student and parent survey feedback has been collected to enhance traffic safety and active transportation information to support safe environments for pedestrians and bicyclists while encouraging students and parents to use active modes of transportation.

Aidee Aldaco and Glenda Woodrow have teamed up to provide all Main Street girls the information and the encouragement to attend the Annual Health, Leadership and Advocacy Summit on Saturday, February 29 at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey in Salinas. Transportation and food are provided free of charge.

Nominations for CSEA Classified Employees For Employees of the Year

It is that time of the year when staff at Main Street Middle School are invited to nominate CSEA Classified Employees and a chance to for the District Employee of the Year Committee to select one employee per category to the County Office. Nomination forms are in staff mailboxes which includes the categories and the completion a nomination letter that speaks on behalf of the each criteria for the district selection committee to consider. Nominations are due by the end of the day Thursday, February 13 to Lorenzo Dominquez.


To be eligible for the nomination, a classified employee must meet these minimum requirements. Be a current employee, be a rank and file employee, not management or supervisory position, and have a minimum of five years of service in the nomination category; there is no minimum FTE.


Categories include Child Nutrition (cook, cafeteria worker), Maintenance, Operations and Facilities (technology support, custodian, electrician, carpenter, groundskeeper, mechanic), Transportation (bus driver, dispatcher, mechanic), Para- Educator and Instructional Assistant (classroom assistant, instructional aide, library assistant), Office and Technical (secretary, attendance clerk, accountant, network engineer, programmer) and Support Services and Security (campus security monitor, health aide, community outreach assistant).

Nominations for Teacher of the Year

The nominee for the Teacher of the Year Program is limited to candidates who are successful as finalists in their local school district competitions; have been teaching for more than eight years, and meet any of the following criteria:

  • Fully credentialed teacher
  • Teachers of adults who provide instruction in the same curriculum as those who teach in elementary or secondary grades
  • Instructors who have some administrative responsibilities but for whom teaching students is the primary responsibility
  • Teachers who are available to fulfill ambassadorial duties during the years of service
  • Teachers who have been in the classroom for more than eight years


Nomination forms are in staff mailboxes and are due to be return to Glenda Woodrow no later than Thursday, February 27th.
