Language Workshop
Essential Question: How can inquiry solve problems?
Reader's Workshop
In Reader’s Workshop, we have studied and noticed the different text features that writers use in nonfiction text. We have also studied, unpacked and named these texts structures which support their understanding. They are as follows: main idea and key details, sequence, time order, problem & solution, and compare and contrast.
Writing Workshop
The third graders have been working very hard to draft and revise their informational writing. They have learned many strategies to teach others through their writing. Most recently they learned how to write good introduction and conclusion paragraphs. They’re also enjoying the opportunity to add special nonfiction text features to their writing, for example: table of contents, headings, bold words, glossaries, pictures with captions, charts, diagrams, etc. Now they are getting ready to publish their informational writing by creating a Book Creator book on their ipads. They have also dabbled in some keyboarding lessons so they can apply their keyboarding skills when typing up their books!
Math Workshop
Our multiplication and division unit is wrapping up quickly! Students have been working very hard at using efficient strategies when they are computing or wrestling through word problems. There was a study guide sent home yesterday. We have noticed a direct correlation between students who complete the study and the grade on their test. These study guides are used to help our kiddos as well as providing an answer key to help you. You can use this study guide for math minutes! After break, we start fractions. Stay tuned for that!
Science
To wrap up our study of magnets, students participated in a magnet car challenge. They needed to use only the force of a magnet (attraction or repulsion) to help their car move. After designing, testing, and revising students were able to have a magnet car race!
Social Studies
Currently we are learning all about citizenship and local government. Students know they are citizens of the city of Waukesha in addition to being part of several other communities (our school, teams, clubs, etc.) They learned the rights and responsibilities of citizens as well as tried to determine the difference between the two. They are working on being responsible citizens by following the rules and laws. We will also use inquiry to learn who our mayor is and what he does for the city of Waukesha using sources such as https://waukesha-wi.gov/. Feel free to share the ways you might participate in our community with your son or daughter, for example: voting, volunteering, etc.
Global Studies
In the month of December, we will be learning about how people from different countries in Europe celebrate holidays. We will be able to do some comparing and contrasting with our holiday traditions as well.
Digital Citizenship
This month we will focus on Internet Safety. We will be learning about the different ways to be safe while on the internet. Students will understand the importance of not sharing personal information online such as their address, phone number, birthday, and school before asking their parents or teacher. We treat a stranger on the internet the same way we would treat a stranger in person. It’s not safe to talk or interact with a stranger online.
Thank you!
The third grade teachers would like to thank our wonderful parents for being such an important part of our third grade showcase and music concert. We truly appreciate the time you took to have your child ready and looking “special” for the concert. We know how important it was to the children! Thanks also for all you do each day to help your child be the BEST third grade learner that they can be!
We wish you and your families a very Happy Holidays and look forward to the New Year!
