We were named a Four Star School for 2013-2014 by the Indiana Department of Education. Qualifiers must score in the top quarter of two ISTEP categories and earn an "A" in the state's accountability ranking. Outstanding!! So proud!!

Recess Ball Donations

With the beautiful Spring weather upon us, many of you may be cleaning out your garages. Should you find that you have any extra balls which could be used at recess (kickballs, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls - no baseballs/softballs), we would definitely accept any donations! Please have your child bring them to the recess doors to deposit in the holder. Thank you!

Band & Orchestra Concert - time change

Please note that there has been a time change for the upcoming Band & Orchestra concert. Students will need to arrive at 7:00 p.m., and the program will begin at 7:30 p.m. The concert is May 14th.

Cartoon Club---Additional Meeting

Mr. Sergi’s Cartoon club will meet one more time, on May 6th next Wednesday from right after school from 3-4:00 to help an HSE high school student illustrate and cartoon a book they wrote. What a great experience, each of you will read a page of the book and create a picture to go with it! It’s a one day event.

Fall Creek Intermediate is having their third-annual Dance Marathon on May 8th, 2015. We are very excited to be raising money for Riley Hospital for Children after school from 3:00pm to 4:45pm. Students must pay $5.00 to participate; however, if students would like to donate any additional money to Riley, they are more than welcome to do so. This week, students received a permission slip to participate in the event that will need to be returned to their homeroom teacher by May 7th. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Renick in Room 607 or send her an e-mail at jrenick@hse.k12.in.us. Looking forward to an incredible opportunity to raise money and awareness for Riley Hospital!

6th Grade End of Year Party

On Thursday, May 28th, your 6th grader will participate in this FCI tradition! Activities will include a photo booth, face painting, bounce house, the ever popular dunk tank and much more!

We are asking for each family to donate $3 to help cover the cost of the t-shirts. Please be assured that each 6th grader will receive a t-shirt, even if they are unable to give a donation.

If you are able to donate, please do so by Wednesday, May 6th. Please send your donation in an envelope marked “FCI End of the Year Party”. Checks should be made out to “FCI PTO”. Your 6th grader can give the envelope to their homeroom teacher.

Student Council Book Drive

Do you have books sitting around your room or house that are collecting dust because you no longer want or need them? The FCI Student Council is organizing a book drive for our library. It is going to take place from May 4 – May 15. There will be boxes in front of the library with different genres in order to keep books organized. We are also going to have a box for more elementary age books that you no longer want/need as well. We can donate those to an elementary library or local charities/shelters.

So FCI students, now is the time to clean up your rooms, bring in some books, and help your FCI library.

Tips For End of the Year Success!

  • Stay Positive-a good attitude can go a long way.
  • Keep Giving Your Best-you’ve worked so hard all year long. Do not give up on your academics and good behavior now. Give your best effort each and every day.
  • Make Someone’s Day-compliment someone, be polite, and remember to smile! You’ll be surprised how it will brighten your day too.
  • Let Things Go-maybe you have had some problems with a friend this year. Remember that you only have a few weeks left with your friends and classmates. Encourage each other, focus on the positive, and enjoy the end of the year with them.

Community Summer Reading Program Opportunity
  • The IUPUI Reading Skills and Speed Reading Program is currently enrolling for summer courses. They focus on phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, study skills, speed reading, and a love of reading for children ages 4-college aged. Panther Preview HIJH

Save the date...Our Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate/Jr. High Panther Preview is scheduled for Wed., Aug. 5th from 1-7 PM. This is a day for students (and their parents) in grades 5-8 to tour the building, find their classes, practice locker combinations, have school pictures taken, pick up a class schedule, purchase school supplies and much, much more. The camps are supervised by the coaches (Sam Kieres—samanthakieres@gmail.com, Bill Laffin—blaffin@hse.k12.in.us, and Kelsey Robertson—krobertson@hse.k12.in.us). Activities and drills are run by the Fishers High School Girls Soccer team! So the campers get the experience of playing and learning from the high school players.

Plants, Plants, Plants! HSE FFA has what you need!

Support the Hamilton Southeastern FFA 2015 Spring Plant Sale!!

The Hamilton Southeastern FFA will once again be offering a great variety of bedding plants, hanging baskets and combination patio pots (at reasonable prices) for Mother’s Day and your spring gardening and outdoor decorating needs. Tomato plants and a few other vegetable plant varieties & herbs will be available for purchase as well.

As in the past, the plant sale will be held on the east side of the high school, back by the greenhouse. The FFA Boosters will be offering a special HSE Staff Pre-Sale Day on Friday, April 24 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. The sale will be open to the public beginning April 25 thru May 9th. The plant sale hours are from 3PM-6PM throughout the week (M-F) and from 8 AM- 4 PM on Saturdays and from 11 AM-2 PM on Sunday. Stop by and check out our great selection and thank you for supporting the HSE FFA program!

Background Check Reminder

If you are planning to volunteer/participate in events coming up at the end of this year, remember that you must have a background check on file. Note that most background checks take a minimum of 3 days to run. Additionally, all volunteers are required by law to complete the HSE Anti-Bullying training webinar.

Background checks remain active for three years. If you would like to check the status of your current background check, you may contact Mari Myren @ 915-4220 or mmyren@hse.k12.in.us.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE!! --- Pick-up/Drop-offs

If your child is a car rider, it is imperative that drivers pick-up/drop-off students in the line that forms along the outside of the parking lot/curb. To be more specific, do NOT park your car and walk your child across the parking lot to the sidewalk at drop-off in the morning. Do NOT park your car and walk up to the curb to walk your child from the curb to through the parking lot during pick-up.

ALL exchanges for which you need to park will require you to accompany your child into the office to drop-off and sign in OR pick-up your child from the office and sign out. While this may add a few extra minutes to the exchange, the safety of all is our utmost concern.

In addition, if you arrive early to drop-off students and decide to park in the lot until drop-off begins, you MUST get in the line to drop your child off at the front and not cut through and jump to the front of the line. Do NOT cut to the front of the line. Given that on any given day we have hundreds of students dropped off, it is imperative that everyone follows the procedures. Safety of all is imperative. Thank you in advance.

NO Texting/Emailing during school day

In an effort to keep instructional time as free from distraction as possible, do not email or text your child during the school day. Please contact the office should you need to get a message to your child.

Students have been reminded of the following:

  • Absolutely NO texting/personal emailing during the school day (7:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m.) to students OR parents via any type of program/app/etc. Consequences will be given should this occur. [Students staying for after school events may utilize such technology after school.]
  • Notifications should be turned off during the school day.
  • If students receive texts/emails during the school day, they should immediately notify their teacher or staff member.
  • We realize there may need to be communication between students working collaboratively during the school day. However, it should only be done at teacher direction/approval.
  • Texting/emailing that does occur outside of school is a parental approval issue. However, if content of texting/emailing outside of school negatively impacts/affects the school environment, there may be consequences that are imposed at school.

Remember...if you need to get a message to your child during the school day, please call the office at 915-4220. All other situations should be resolved outside the school day.

Keyboarding Skills

Dear Parents and Students:

Below is a recommended site for intermediate students to utilize to learn and improve keyboarding skills prior to entering junior high school. Please consider working on these skills outside of the school day since keyboarding is not a course offered at the intermediate level in HSE Schools. Below are points to consider which have been offered by Dr. Stephanie Loane, Director of Elementary Education for HSE.

Rationale for Keyboarding at Intermediate Levels

· Word processing is a basic skill that should be mastered before the JH level with proficiency before poor habits are established

· JH students who demonstrate proficiency when entering grade 7 would be provided with other opportunities beyond basic keyboarding yet to be determined

Keyboarding Instruction and Practice

· Parents will monitor progress at home, encouraging daily practice and keyboarding habits with typingweb.com

· On recommended website students will progress through Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced courses following a sequence of lessons and practice games

· Students will take assessments on website to monitor progress at home

Social Media - Parent Involvement

Social Media is all about us. It inundates our lives daily. We can't escape its presence. This is the same for your children.

We know many of you are aware of and discuss appropriate social media use with your children. However, it is worth noting again at this time as there are increasing social media situations involving FCI students finding their way into the classroom environment negatively impacting focus and interaction. Should this occur, there may be a need for school administration to be involved. Please take some time to discuss appropriate use of social media with your child.

Transportation Changes and Doctor Appts---A Note from the Office

In order to make the process more seamless for transportation changes and Dr. Appts., we would prefer a note sent in with your student so the office has record of the change. We send a pass to the classroom so there is fewer interruptions during class. In the event that a change needs to be made during the school day please call the office @ 915-4220. If you need changes to be made after school hours please leave a message on our attendance line @ 596-7499. Also please include in your note and message: your students full name, homeroom teacher, the time of the event, your full name, and a telephone # in the event we have questions.

Have a collection you would like to share?

FCI Collection Case

The Collection Case at FCI is a fun way for students, families, and staff to share their personal collections with everyone at FCI. The Collection Case, located in the main hallway between the Nurses's Office and the Library, is highly visible and students love to look at the case and see the collections that have been displayed. Any school-appropriate collection would be great for the Collection Case. Last year, some of the items/collections that students and families shared were: Legos, soccer jerseys from around the world, M&M wrappers from around the world, a large hornet's nest, memorabilia from foreign countries, rocks and minerals, Pokemon cards, and WWII-related items.
