Update to COVID-19 Safety Mitigations
Good evening VBCPS families and staff-
As the transmission of COVID-19 continues to decline in Virginia Beach, we will carefully remove mitigation layers intended to address the virus. This process will happen over time and only when Virginia Beach is experiencing a low risk of transmission. Please know that any such changes to our safety protocols will be made in consultation with and following the approval of the Virginia Beach Department of Public Health.
The following will no longer be used in schools:
- Seating charts for contact tracing
- Classroom sign-in sheets
- COVID Safety Assessment Teams
Also, due to low participation and a continuing decline in local cases, we are cancelling the voluntary COVID-19 testing that was being offered for students and staff at both Renaissance Academy and Plaza Annex, effective Monday, March 14. Should you need testing, please use other locally available testing locations, such as pharmacies or healthcare providers.
The following have resumed in schools:
- Internal/external drills (i.e., fire drills, lockdown safety drills)
- Water fountain access, although students and staff are encouraged to use water bottles
The following school events and milestones may move forward, noting that these events may be conducted outdoors when possible, and allow for social distancing:
- End of year celebrations, i.e., fifth and eighth grade Moving On, award ceremonies, prom, ring dances, field-day, NJHS ceremonies
- Indoor after-school activities and events, using standard fire marshal room capacity
- In-person PTA and SPC meetings
- Regional elementary field trips, i.e., Jamestown
- Outdoor pep rallies
- Assemblies/awards
- Transition programs, i.e., rising sixth grade
- Grad walks
For staff, face-to-face meetings may resume, including PLCs. We ask that social distancing be considered wherever possible. Employees with questions should contact their supervisor or administrator.
The following are expected to be removed, pending upcoming changes in state regulations, within the coming weeks. That said, they will remain in place until those changes are finalized:
- COVID-19 dashboard updates
- COVID-19 capacity limitations for common areas and its associated signage
Please note that the Virginia Department of Health will continue to investigate and report outbreaks.
The following mitigation layers will remain in place:
- Quarantine timeline and protocols, including masking during isolation and quarantine period
- Food service distribution, including lunch schedules and seating arrangements, allowing for distancing when possible
- An isolation room in each school
- Masks required for nurses when caring for students with COVID-like symptoms and for those individuals sent to the clinic with COVID-like symptoms
- Plexiglass in classrooms where teachers prefer it, otherwise it will be picked up by maintenance staff
- Overnight field trip restrictions
- No parent/guardian visitation with children during lunch
- Floor distancing signage and hallway directional signs
Please note that even in areas where the community transmission level of the coronavirus is low, the CDC recommends staying home when sick, staying up to date on vaccines and getting tested if you have symptoms of COVID-19.
Thank you for your support of Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
Please review the revised 2021-2022 VBCPS Calendar below:

Notes From Class of 2022 Sponsors
Hi, seniors. Hope you had a wonderful winter break! Are you yearbook-ready? It's as simple as 1, 2, 3.
Step 1: Take your senior portrait. You should have done this already, but if not, schedule an appointment with a studio TODAY! Time is quickly running out.
Step 2: Select your pose for the yearbook. Remember, it must be one of the formal pictures of you wearing the black drape or "tux" in front of a blue background.
Step 3: Write a senior quote. This step is optional.
You can use the form below to complete Steps 2 & 3. Please note that you may have already completed Step 2 using the email that Prestige sent you. Also, if you took your senior portrait with a different studio, simply have them email me the picture of your choice. I will reply letting them know I received it. For questions, email me at etbell@vbschools.com.
