Notes from the Principal
Science Fair
I want to send out a HUGE congratulations to all of our Science Fair contestants. Even if you were not selected to move on to the Regional Science Fair, you all did a wonderful job. The projects look fantastic and I am so impressed with the effort and hard work that is clearly reflected in each project. We definitely have some budding, superstar scientists!!! Thanks also to all the families who came out to enjoy our Annual Science Fair/STEM Family Night. It was so great to celebrate the awesome work of our children as a community.
Garden Improvements Continue!!
Some of you may have already noticed the fabulous irrigation system we now have installed for the garden boxes in our school garden. Funding for this was made possible through a grant from Whole Foods and is yet another piece to the Environmental Stewardship Program that is taking shape here at Boone. A huge shout out and thank you needs to go to Kate and Jim Rooni for their efforts in this important “mini” project. They helped find and apply for the grant, as well as design and install the irrigation system itself. You guys are AMAZING!!!
Monarch Habitat Work Day 2/9
Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 9th. This past Fall, we completed the first stage of construction of our Monarch Habitat. With Spring on the way, it is now time to complete the second stage of this project. There are additional beds and a pathway that need to be set up. We are asking for family and community volunteers to join us from 9 – 12 on February 9th, to complete this work.
Tis the Season…for colds and flu’s
We are entering that wonderful time of year known to all parents and teachers as the “Time of Great Absences”, or in everyday terms, it is Flu and Cold season. Please make sure you are reminding your children to wash their hands, cover their mouths when coughing, etc. We are beginning to see the tendrils of the flu make its way into Boone. Hopefully, we can focus our diligence on hygiene and limit the effects on our attendance this time around.
Cough Drops at School
Just a quick reminder! As is AISD Policy, students are not allowed to have cough drops with them in the classroom. If your child needs cough drops during the day, they need to bring them to the nurse's office in the morning. The nurse then will contact you to get permission forms signed.
By district policy, we are not allowed to administer them without a signed form from the parent.
Afternoon Dismissal - Side Parking Lot Pick-up
Please remember to not to pick up your children until you are in the front area of the pick-up zone. We have parents getting out of their car while in line and going to get their child from the teacher then getting back in their car. This is creating a very unsafe situation for our children. This is a very hectic time at Boone with many students and adults moving around the cars, etc. We need you comply with this request to help us keep all of our children safe.Safety Drills Week at Boone
At Boone Elementary, we take safety very seriously and practice drills and procedures every semester. Boone has a fire drill every month in accordance to district requirements. During a fire drill, the school is evacuated and procedures are followed to account for every adult and child.
Next week we will practice all of the other drills.
Here are the dates and times for the drills:
Monday, February 4 - Hold Drill at 9:00 a.m.
Wednesday, February 6 - Lockout Drill at 10:00 a.m.
Thursday, February 7 - Shelter Drill at 9:00 a.m.
Friday, February 8 - Lockdown Drill at 9:30 a.m.
We will alert all visitors to the drill and the campus will be closed for a short period during the drill. Please see the picture below for a description of the drills. If you have any questions, email the Assistant Principal at amie.chalberg@austinisd.org.

Read-a-Thon!!!
We are gearing up for Boone’s 5th annual Read-a-Thon. Just like last year, this Read-a-Thon will directly benefit the Boone library. Last year we raised $7,838.70. This was our profit!! We used the funds along with funds donated by PTA to modernize the library with new carpet, paint, furniture, etc.
This year we are going to use the funds raised to update our book collection and to host a SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAM. Details will come later, but we are planning on being open to our Boone families and community on select dates throughout the summer. I am so excited!
Look for flyers in your child’s folder with Read-a-Thon Info. They will be coming home on Monday, February 4.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.

We are starting to see cases of the Flu at Boone. Let’s all work together to ensure the health and safety of all our wonderful students and families during this time. Please talk to your child about frequent hand washing, not sharing food or drinks with others, and please keep your child home if they are sick. Students with a temperature of 100°F or greater must stay home from school and cannot return until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.
Please see the pictures below for more information about the flu and some preventative actions you can take to help prevent getting the flu.
Flu reporting: We are required to report cases of the flu to the state on a weekly basis. The report does not include any student information, just the number of cases at Boone. If your child is diagnosed with the flu, please make the front office and Health Team aware of which type (A, B, both, undetermined).
Thank you for your continued cooperation of the AISD fever policy. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.
