Our Trial at Virtual Learning starts Monday, March 23rd

Hello Phoenix Families,

We are excited to work with our students virtually. Next Monday, March 23rd we will start a trial week of teaching via distance learning. All of the students are familiar with Canvas, so please tell them to start there. Also, the teachers will be using different means to communicate with students during their scheduled block (see below). Therefore, students may need to learn about other platforms and sites. We will share that information as we go along.

Do try to log in during the scheduled block so we can see if it works. Also, we all have allotted the time slot of 3-4pm to answer any questions you may have. Students are strongly encouraged to try logging in during the allotted time. We completely understand if they are not able to. We will try to record online sessions so that students can view them later. However, we would like to troubleshoot early so that soon, our students will be able to interface with the teachers and their classmates. We know the kids miss each other and students learn a lot through collaboration. So, please encourage them to give it a try. AGAIN, IT IS NOT THE EXPECTATION THAT STUDENTS MUST SIT DOWN AT THEIR LAPTOP FOR A FULL DAY OF INSTRUCTION. THESE ARE JUST TIMES THAT TEACHERS ARE AVAILABLE VIRTUALLY TO ASSIST IN NAVIGATING THE RESOURCES, PROVIDING WEBINARS, ALLOWING COLLABORATIONS, ETC. Reassure them that this is a trial. We don't want them to stress if they run into problems. Tell them to take a deep breath and keep trying. Hundreds of kids will be logging on Monday, so we are sure there will probably be glitches.

To have a successful online experience,

We recommend that students have earbuds and possibly, a microphone. We understand if you do not. Not a problem. The laptops have built in mics, but sometimes the quality is not the best.

We do need you to take care of a couple of things if you can before Monday. Try out some of the programs in advance as they may require students to "sign up". This will give them a chance to knock out some of the preliminary stuff. Many of the teachers will be using Zoom. Please complete the consent form below and have students put Zoom on their computers and/or mobile devices.

Quick Tip regarding online names

Tips: When you do log on to any online platforms, please use your name and not made up screennames like “Skater543”. We want to see who is able to get online and who may be experiencing difficulties. Fake names won’t help us in this area. Thanks in advance.

Reminder!!

If your child took their laptop home, please be sure to fill out the Laptop Checkout Form
